In the mid 1990's Professor Claudio De Simone, M.D., was the person responsible for developing several probiotic combinations based on his scientific understanding of enzymes as well as the interaction of people and microflora in their gut. The different formulas all contained a combination of high potency probiotic bacteria that comprised of at least 3 species of bacteria.
In 1998 he patented one of these formulas which was made up of 3 strains of streptococcus thermophilus, lactobacilli, and bifidobacterium. Then in 2000 the first The first research on the De Simone Formulation was published in Gastroenterology (Gionchetti et al. 2000). The study related to the management of pouchitis.
In 2003 this De Simone Formulation was launched in the U.S.A. under the trade name "VSL#3®" by VSL Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In 2014 Professor Claudio De Simone ended his relationship with VSL Pharmaceuticals, Inc. This is after many studies, actually over 63 human studies, were conducted and published on the De Simone Formulation showing its efficacy in the dietary management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), pouchitis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), in particular Ulcerrative Colitis (UC).
