We all have a different definition of diarrhea. From our daily experience, we know what our “normal” bowel movement is. So, the best description of diarrhea is an “abnormal increase in the frequency and liquidity of our stools.”
Adults may have diarrhea about four times a year. It often starts with cramps and abdominal pain and usually lasts a few days. It may cause dehydration, which is particularly dangerous to children and the elderly.
The most common causes of diarrhea are gastro-intestinal infections, viruses, bacteria or some form of intestinal disease, particularly Irritable Bowel Syndrome IBS and Inflammatory Bowel Disease IBD. It may be brought on by food intolerances or even parasites. But whether your diarrhea is the result of a temporary infection or the symptom of a chronic problem, it should always be taken seriously.
Probiotics, prebiotics and several natural supplements are extremely successful in treating diarrhea.
Dr. Pam Recommends:
Easy to use, Genova Lab’s home stool tests help identify what causes may be associated with diarrhea. The Comprehensive Parsitology & Microbiology Test (GSD6000) identifies micro-organisms like bacteria, yeast and/or parasites, that may be causing or contributing to the symptoms of diarrhea. If the results are positive, Genova Lab fortunately grows out the organisms and can tell you what natural and/or medical agents are be effective in getting rid of them.
There are many studies that support the use of prebiotics made from partially hydrolized guar gum for helping diarrhea. Perfect Pass Prebiotic (PSN1000) is easy to take. You just add this soluable fiber to water. There is no odor, no taste and dissolves easily. This prebiotic is not like inulin and FOS as it has no side effects and does not feed bad bacteria.
Perfect Pass Probiotic (PSN2000) is the recommended probiotic as it can survive through stomach acid 100% of the time. Also, it is human strain, found in nature and contains bacillus strains in excess of what exists in the gut. This is why it is so effective in helping our friendly bacteria flourish.
Probiotics derived mainly from lactobacillus and bifidus strains are also useful in alleviating symptoms. They provide a metabolic and/or immune modulation effect. These include: Dr Ohhira's Professional Probiotics (OMX1060), Dr Ohhira's Original Probiotics (OMX2060), VSL#3 unflavored packets (VSL3000), VSL3 capsules (VSL4100), Visbiome capsules (VIS1000), Visbiome flavored packets (VIS2000), Spectraprobiotics (NNF1040), and Multiacidophilus. Therapeutic doses may be necessary for a short period of time. Start with one and increase daily until you get to the dose that controls the symptoms of diarrhea.
Slippery Elm (VTN2550) has been used as an herbal remedy in North America for centuries. Native Americans used slippery elm orally for diarrhea and stomach problems. Slippery elm contains mucilage, a substance that becomes a slick gel when mixed with water. It coats and soothes the stomach and intestines. Uva Ursi (MUR1010) is another herbal consideration.
