Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital have recognized commensal bacteria in the human intestine that produce a neurotransmitter that may play a role in treating or preventing inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease.
Karina Pokusaeva, a researcher on the study and a member of the laboratory of James Versalovic,says, " We identified the first bifidobacterial strain, Bifidobacterium dentium, which is capable of secreting large amounts of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). This molecule is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central and enteric nervous systems." Read more
Recent research suggests that fish oil supplementation in the first six months of an infants life helps to reduce the production of allergy-related mediators and increases levels of omega 3 fatty acids.
The study is the first to test the effects of fish oil supplementation immediately after the birth of a child up to six months of age. A team of UWA researchers collected blood samples from 120 six-month-old infants who had been given fish oil or control oil from birth and assessed fatty acid levels as well as immune cell responses to milk, egg and house dust mite allergens.
