A new Cornell study reports that inflammation -- not genetic susceptibility -- drives the growth of intestinal bacteria and invasive E. coli linked to Crohn's disease (CD).
Scientists have long wondered about the role of bacteria in Crohns Disease. Recent studies have shown marked changes in the composition of the intestinal bacteria in people with CD, leading researchers to ask: Are microbial abnormalities a direct consequence of genetic abnormalities linked to Crohns and precede and initiate inflammation, or does intestinal inflammation bring on the bugs?
Cornell researchers reported that inflammation drives microbial imbalances (dysbiosis) and the proliferation of a specific type of E. coli that is adherent, invasive and found in the ileum. And genetics, they said, do play a role in determining the threshold and magnitude of dysbiosis in response to acute inflammation induced by environmental triggers. Read more
The annual Probiotics Symposium was held at the fabulous Solamar Hotel downtown San Diego Sept 21-22 2012. It was great venue. The hotel provided healthy meals and excellent service. The first presenter was Ingrid Kohlstadt, MD who spoke about the systemic manifestations of gastrointestinal dysbiosis.
She has a new textbook coming out that we look forward to referencing. She drew our attention to the association of obesity with microbial health... what comes first? Her discussion on the bidirectional & entangled nature of the relationship was very interesting indeed. She reminded us how bacteria provide nutrients essential for metabolism. Read more
There is a new natural, herbal foot pad available that is worn on the arch of the foot for up to 10 hours. It is able to eliminate toxins, including heavy metals. The Japanese have been using this product for some time now. It is used to combat fatigue by improving circulation and increasing metabolism. It also enhances the quality of sleep. In general, it improves immune function and allows us to stay healthy and clean.
When toxins are absorbed into the system, most become embedded in our tissues. As the pads are placed on our skin, the natural herbs interact, and begin their work by emitting infrared energy. The infrared rays not only enhance cells function directly, but also stimulates the acupuncture meridians on the soles of the feet to promote healing and relieve tension. The foot pads gently stimulate meridian points for 8 - 10 hours. Read more
