In a recent study conducted by researchers at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Shanghai Research Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, shows that acupuncture is an effective treatment for Crohn's disease.
The study was published in the Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of acupuncture on intestinal fibrosis in cases of Crohn's disease. The researchers considered the effects of acupuncture on basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and type I collagen (Col I) in the intestines of laboratory rats with Crohn's disease. After the use of acupuncture, the expressions of Col I and bFGF reduced markedly in rats with Crohn's disease. Read more
Many people are unfamiliar with probiotics, however there are studies to demonstrate that these supplements may be beneficial in the treatment of numerous ailments. Probiotics are dietary supplements that contain sufficient Beneficial Bacteria.
For example, certain types of yogurt contain probiotics in therapeutic quantities. This means that certain food have an adequate amount of this supplement to be useful and is measured in quantities where it cannot be overindulged.
Probiotics are thought to assist the body's digestive system and are sometimes recommended by physicians. More frequently, on the other hand, probiotics are recommended by nutritionists as part of a healthy, well balanced diet plan. Read more
A new study suggests that having a 45 minute nap during the day, can help stressed-out people lower their blood pressure and protect their heart. The finding comes from a study that is being published in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine. Eighty-five healthy university students were divided into two groups. One group had an hour-long period during the day to sleep, and the others group had no time to sleep.
Both groups were given a mental Stress test. Blood pressure and pulse rates increased in both groups of students when they took the stress test, but the average blood pressure of those who slept for at least 45 minutes was considerably lower after the Stress test than it was for those who did not sleep. a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests taking antibiotics for the flu might actually cause harm - or at least make you feel worse.
The researchers treated mice with four common antibiotics, then injected the rodents with a flu bug. The antibiotics impaired their ability to produce an important flu-fighting molecule called Interleukin-1 beta, which is produced in the intestines. Intestinal bacteria play a key role by constantly priming the gut to produce IL-1 beta.
The scientists also discovered that what happens in the gut doesn't always stay there. Antibiotic-cleansing of colon bacteria also affected the immune response in organs as far away as the lungs. Read more
What's tasty, easy, and has lots of health benefits?
It's got powerful boosting protein and bone building calcium. In fact, the health benefits of yogurt are so impressive that many health-conscious people make it a daily habit.

People who sleep on their right side suffer reflux for longer periods than people who sleep on their left side. Left-side sleeping may kepp the junction between the stomach and esophagus above the level of gastric acid, reducing heartburn symptoms.
Self-defense: If you have heartburn, sleep on an incline so that gravity helps keeps stomach contents in place. And if you tend to sleep on your side, make it your left side.
One hundred forty men with localized nonmetastatic prostate cancer, who had elected to forgo active treatment, and instead to be followed by active surveillance, were randomly assigned to receive, in double-blind fashion, selenium (200 or 800 mcg per day as high-selenium yeast) or placebo for up to 5 years.
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) velocity was used as a marker of cancer progression. The median PSA doubling time was 6.24 years in the placebo group, 6.98 years in the group receiving 200 mcg.per day of selenium, and 8.45 years in the group receiving 800 mcg per day of selenium (differences not statistically significant).
In secondary subgroup analysis, among men in the highest quartile of baseline plasma selenium, mean PSA velocity was significantly higher in those receiving 800 mcg per day of selenium than in those receiving placebo (p = 0.018).
Results: The authors concluded that selenium supplementation did not slow the rise in PSA levels in men with localized prostate cancer, and that high-dose selenium was associated with increased PSA velocity in men with high baseline plasma selenium concentrations.
Prostate cancer drugs may raise risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke, warns Sheldon Marks, MD.
The FDA is requiring updated warning labels on seven drugs: Eligard, Lupron, Synarel, Trelstar, Vantas, Viadur and Zoladex.
Generally, the benefits of these drugs vastly exceed their risks. The only alternatives are intensive chemotherapy, which carries its own serious risks...or doing nothing, which allows the disease to spread.
Self-defense: Eat right, exercise, and get heart and blood-sugar tests regularly
Why is potassium iodine administered to people who have been exposed to, or may be exposed to nuclear radiation?
When a nuclear accident or explosion occurs, particles are released into the air, some of which are radioactive. These particles can be inhaled, or get into the water or food of humans and animals, and in that way taken into our bodies.
Some of these radioactive particles include radioactive iodine particles that can be taken up by our thyroid gland. Some people who get radioactive iodine taken up by their thyroid gland can develop cancer or other thyroid problems days or years down the road.
By giving susceptible people potassium iodine or KI, supplements, a person can "saturate" the thyroid gland with iodine and keep it from taking up the radioactive iodine particles that might be present in the body.
Caused by the herpes simplex virus, cold sores can be brought on by stress, an overtaxed immune system or an imbalance of the amino acids arginine and lysine.
Zinc helps sores heal faster when taken as a supplement or applied topically. Propolis, an anti-inflammatory and antiviral, can be applied twice daily... or take a 1,000-mg supplement once a day.
Lysine sine decreases the duration of an outbreak by two-thirds. Apply it topically or take a 1,000-mg supplement. Dab the cold sore with a cotton ball saturated with apple cider vinegar to dry out lesions.
Licorice root tincture: put 15 to 20 drops into a glass of warm water and drink three times a day during an outbreak.
To avoid any possible interactions or side effects, talk to your doctor before taking any supplements.
