Vitamins Help Crohn's Disease
Sharon Dobson says that one of the best ways to maintain a healthy body and avoid malnutrition is to ensure adequate vitamin and crohns supplement treatment.
Many studies that have been conducted on Crohn's sufferers have found that the vast majority of those with Crohn's are generally deficient in Vitamin A, Vitmain B, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Vitamin E.

The natural deficiency of these vitamins is likely due to:
  • dietary restrictions,
  • medications, and
  • poor nutrient absorption.
Its important to remember that Vitamin A is necessary for a healthy normal immune system function, which is required to maintain a healthy mucous membrane. The skin and mucosal cells that line the digestive tract, urinary tract and airways, create a barrier and are the body's initial defence against infection. Vitamin A also plays a vital role in immune response and in the proper function of the adrenal glands which control the way we respond to stress.
Omega 3 During Chemotherapy
The Scientific Daily reports that docosahexanoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oils, has been shown to reduce the size of tumours and enhance the positive effects of the chemotherapy drug cisplatin, while limiting its harmful side effects. The rat experiments provide some support for the plethora of health benefits often ascribed to omega-3 acids.

Professor A. M. El-Mowafy led a team of researchers from Mansoura University, Egypt, who studied DHA's effects on solid tumours growing in mice, as well as investigating how this fatty acid interacts with cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug that is known to cause kidney damage.

El-Mowafy said, "DHA elicited prominent chemopreventive effects on its own, and appreciably augmented those of cisplatin as well. Furthermore, this study is the first to reveal that DHA can obliterate lethal cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity and renal tissue injury."

DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is commonly found in cold-water fish oil, and some vegetable oils. It is a major component of brain gray matter and of the retina in most mammalian species and is considered essential for normal neurological and cellular developments. According to the authors, "While DHA has been tentatively linked with protection against cardiovascular, neurological and neoplastic diseases, there exists a paucity of research information, in particular regarding its interactions with existing chemotherapy drugs". The researchers found that, at the molecular level, DHA acts by reducing leukocytosis (white blood cell accumulation), systemic inflammation, and oxidative stress - all processes that have been linked with tumour growth.

El-Mowafy and his colleagues have called for greater deployment of omega-3 in the fight against cancer. They write, "Our results suggest a new, fruitful drug regimen in the management of solid tumors based on combining cisplatin, and possibly other chemotherapeutics, with DHA".

Did You Know ???
  • According to Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, salt is the single most harmful element in the food supply, worse even than saturated and trans fats.

The folks at the Food and Drug Administration may soon agree. The FDA is considering a proposal to remove salt (sodium chloride) from its list of foods "generally recognized as safe" or GRAS. The reason: Americans, by and large, consume too much of the stuff, primarily in processed foods.

Excessive salt consumption is linked to high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends a daily salt intake of less than 2,300 milligrams or about a teaspoon, but most Americans consume almost twice that each day.

  • Grape seed extract holds promise as a potent anti-cancer agent. A study at University of Kentucky found that natural substances called proanthocyanidins found in grape seeds killed 76% of leukemia cells within one day without damaging healthy cells. The extract caused the cancer cells "to commit suicide," said researcher Xianglin Shi. Previous laboratory studies found that grape seed extract also protected against breast, prostate, and skin cancer by causing the cancer cells to die.
