Drug-resistant Staph or Staphylococcus germ more prevalent

According to a survey released recently by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, at least 30,000 U.S. hospital patients may have the super-bug Staph i.e. staphylococcus, at any given time. Hospital study notes that Staph is observed at 10 times the rate of earlier estimates.

According to a comprehensive study, the dangerous drug-resistant Staph germ may be infecting as many as 5% of hospital and nursing home patients. Read more

Fatty Acid Balance Influences Depression Risk

According to a new report available at ScienceDaily.com improving Americans' dietary ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids may be able decrease their risk of depression and inflammatory diseases.

Americans consume about 20 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids, far in excess of an optimal ratio of 4:1 or even 2:1. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in eggs, poultry, and grains, while omega-3s are supplied by cold-water fish, flaxseed, and walnuts.

The blood of 43 middle-aged to elderly men and women was analyzed for interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), two cytokines that enhance inflammation. Those who consumed the most omega-6 fatty acids and reported more symptoms of depression had much higher levels of IL-6 and TNF-alpha.

The scientists also suggest that low intake of omega-3s are associated with chronic inflammation.

7 Symptoms Men Should Never Ignore

Dr. Jean Bonhomme of the Men's Health Network says that when it comes to health, men often take better care of their cars than their own bodies.

Dr. Bonhomme suggests that a possible reason for men's higher mortality from major illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes is their unwillingness to seek medical help as often as women do.

Here are some symptoms that a man should always take seriously:

  1. Chest Pain
  2. Shortness of breath
  3. Unintended weight loss
  4. Blood in the urine or stool
  5. Changes in urination
  6. Leg swelling
  7. Skin lesions that don't go away

  • Aspirin Benefits

According to a new study published in the June issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, regular aspirin use significantly reduces the incidence of both cancer and heart disease. Other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, were found to have no effect.
Researchers followed 22,507 postmenopausal women for 10 years. All reported on their aspirin and NSAID use as part of a detailed health questionnaire. None of the women had cancer or heart disease at the start of the study.

  • Blueberries May Help Prevent Colon Cancer

According to presenters at a national meeting of the American Chemical Society, compounds in blueberries protected laboratory animals from colon cancer. The compound, known as pterostilbene, is an antioxidant similar to resveratrol that could be developed into a preventive nutritional supplement.

After rats were given a known carcinogen to induce colon cancer, half were supplemented with pterostilbene. After eight weeks, the supplemented animals had 57% fewer pre-cancerous colon lesions than the control rats, as well as reduced colon cell proliferation and expression of genes involved in inflammation, which is a risk factor for the disease.
