The epidemic of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is here and even with a signifiant decrease in antibiotic use since 1995, the speread of resistant bacteria continues to skyrocket.

A team of researchers lead by Iichiroh Ohhira, Ph.D., has turned to beneficial intestinal flora to help win the war against bacteria. Scientists have traditionally assumed that the digestive system's mechanism for destroying pathogenic microbes was a result of the good bacteria simply outnumbering the bad - large colonies of friendly flora deprive harmful microbes of necessary food and nutrients. However, recent studies show that these beneficial bacteria can also fight pathogenic microbes in ways scientists never suspected.

Through mechanisms researchers don't yet fully understand, good bacteria located in the gut boost the body's general immune response to microbial invaders outside of the digestive tract.

Recent animal studies indicate that friendly intestinal bacteria may also ward off disease by improving liver function. Since the liver is one of the primary disease-fighting organs, researchers believe that boosting its defense mechanism may augment the body's ability to disarm and eliminate potentially deadly organisms.

Based on this research, Dr. Ohhira and his team at Okayama University developed a revolutionary probiotic (a supplement containing live beneficial organisms) with a new bacterial strain proven to destroy resistant pathogens. They isolated a lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strain known as Enterococcus faecalis TH 10 in tempeh, a Malaysian soy product. This bacterium was carefully isolated and fermented over a five-year period, as a longer fermentation period was shown to enhance its microbe-killing abilities. As a result of this inventive culturing process, TH 10 became potent enough to kill methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureas (MRSA), which is responsible for many rapidly spreading infections occurring now in hospitals. Conquering this virulent microbe came at a critical juncture, as a few strains of Staph aureus are already resistant to over 20 antibiotic compounds. Researchers have found that TH 10's antimicrobial capacity extends to a number of other antibiotic-resistant microbes.

Although the "superstar" of Dr. Ohhira probiotics is TH 10, the other 11 bacteria in the product are also proven microbe killers. In fact, the anticarcinogenic activity of the lactic-acid bacteria (LAB) in general is quite significant. Since the beneficial bacteria are going to eventually settle in the intestinal tract, you might expect that colon cancer would be the only type of cancer affected by these organisms. While research shows that colonization by beneficial bacteria does have an inhibitory effect on colon cancer precursors, the friendly flora enforces the immune system's overall inhibitory effect on tumors and cancerous activity by neutralizing the carcinogens, like nitrosamines. Through stimulation of the general immune response, tumor generation may be reduced for other types of cancer.

Scientists are discovering that other illnesses not usually associated with the intestinal flora may also be inhibited by LAB. When animal and human test subjects are given probiotics containing LAB, they build a stronger general immune system that can resist viral fly infections, salmonella bacterial infestations, and cell mutations that are precursors to intestinal tumors. Animal and in vitro studies conducted in Italy indicate that probiotics may also be useful in treating urinary tract infections, immune disorders, candida vaginitis, lactose intolerance, high cholestrol levels, and food allergies.

One of the difficulties in developing foods and supplements that contain live bacteria is that the bacteria may no longer be alive by the time you use the product due to improper packaging, exposing the product to high heat during processing, or extended storage time without properly nourishing the bacteria.

To ensure the viability and potency of their bacteria Dr. Ohhira team developed a protective shell that keeps bacteria alive and free from infestation by harmful pathogens,  Their special fermentation process is "cold" and doesn't expose the bacteria to a high heat. Recently, while doing research for the revision of my book 'Guess What Came to Dinner', I discovered a new break through dietary supplement product for the recolonization of the intestinal tract now available in the United States. Absent a sufficient number of friendly bacteria known as "probiotics," human life could not exist. When a human fails to maintain a sufficient number of good bacteria in the body, disease will occur and death likely will follow.

It is extremely important for us to cultivate and maintain a healthy colony of good bacteria in the GI tract, a colony that is composed mainly of several strains of living lactic acid bacteria. Ideally the microflora colony in the digestive tract should be composed of a ratio of 85 percent friendly bacteria to 15 percent harmful bacteria. The regular consumption of a high-quality probiotics product that contains numerous strains of living lactic acid bacteria will enhance a person's efforts to maintain a healthy microflora colony of bacteria in the digestive tract.

The human body, although created with a proper ratio of good to bad bacteria, frequently alters the ratio of bacteria as a result of today's modern lifestyle. The use of antibiotics inhibits not only bad bacteria but also good bacteria, thus permitting bad bacteria to invade the GI tract and multiply in high numbers that disturb the delicate balance between the good and bad bacteria. This balance also is upset by the use of oral contraceptives, steroids, exposure to radiation through x-rays and radiation therapies, excessive consumption of chlorinated water, the consumption of refined sugars and other refined foods, poor digestion, poor elimination of waste, stress, an unhealthy diet,
etc.

Scientists have determined that when the delicate balance between good and bad bacteria is adversely altered, the body is overloaded with toxins and disease. According to imminent health care professionals, toxins emanating from the GI tract are the cause of most chronic diseases and illnesses.

Scientists also have determined that there are many negative health effects that stem from the loss of probiotics, including the lack of recirculation of female hormones such as estrogen and the overgrowth of detrimental, disease-causing bacteria and yeasts such as Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Yersinia enterocolitis, Clostridium dificile, etc. The presence of too few probiotics encourages the production of endotoxins in the GI tract, which contributes to lupus erythematosus, pancreatitis, psoriasis and other skin conditions. A shortage of probiotics allows partially digested proteins to enter the bloodstream, contributing to eczema, nervous system disorders, rheumatoid arthritis and a variety of other immune system disorders.

GI tract problems such as leaky bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, spastic colon and irritable bowel syndrome are contributed to by a loss of probiotics and the appearance of detrimental bacteria. Specific strains of detrimental bacteria are known to cause severe health problems. For example, E. coli may lead to problems with insulin and blood sugar function. Yersinia enterocolitica produces substances that cause the over-production of the thyroid hormone. This detrimental bacterium reportedly also contributes to various autoimmune diseases.

The colonization of the friendly bacteria in the GI tract begins at birth. Dr. Ohhira and other scientists observed that a high percentage of children nourished on mother's milk enjoy good health and a stronger immune system when compared to bottle-fed infants. He also observed that these children acquire a larger number of friendly strains of bifidobacterium when compared to bottle-fed children who have few or none at all.

Dr. Ohhira noted that the acidic colon condition of breast-fed babies remained within a constant range of pH 5.5 to 6.5. His studies have established that the lactic acid bacteria that colonized the colon of infants created this acidic condition. The organic acids, produced by the lactic acid bacteria present in the colon, prevent the survival of harmful bacteria in the baby's intestinal tract. This inherent condition forms the first line of defense for the baby against any form of illness.

As Dr. Ohhira delved further into the science of good health, he discovered that certain naturally fermented foods consumed in Asia are a rich source of lactic acid bacteria. Ingredients of OMX probiotics include 92 types of natural crops including special leaves, bark, herbs and fruits, which grow wild in a vast region of the Kibi Highlands and Hiruzen Highlands of the Chugoku district in Japan, several kinds of seaweed and various organic vegetables.
