VSL#3 Probiotics FAQ’s

VSL#3 Probiotics FAQ’s

Thanks to our customers for sending in questions. We thank VSL#3 manufacturer support for providing answers to many of the questions asked.

I have bought VSL capsules from your before. The seal on the new bottles are completely different. Are you selling a ‘knock off’ now?

No, we don’t sell any knock off supplements. VSL#3 has repackaged their probiotics, both the packets and the capsules.

VSL#3 is now packaged with a new innovative cap that preserves the live bacteria and maintains potency by reducing the possibility of exposure to heat, light, moisture and contamination.

This has allowed VSL to forgo the need for a second seal (similar to a water bottle) without any risk to tampering.

Why are the packets not the same as they used to be?
They’re different, right?

This is another advancement to VSL#3 packets or sachets, as they used to be called.

Now there are 3-layers instead of 2, making them slightly thicker.

They reduce the heat, light and moisture that is able to enter the packet.

This new packet preserves the live bacteria, maintaining potency as well as reducing risk of contamination.

Do the capsules really have corn starch in them now? They didn’t used to……

Yes, there is corn starch in VSL#3 capsules now.

Is it true that the flavored VSL sachets have been discontinued?

That is correct. However, the unflavored sachets are still available.

What is the best way to take VSL3 Capsules or Packets?

Yes, VSL3 comes in both powder packets or as capsules. Both are equally good.

Packets
The packets or sachets, are designed to be able to be mixed with cold drinks like water and juice or soft food like yogurt or apple sauce.

The manufacturers of VSL#3 advise against mixing the powder with hot drinks or foods, for fear that the extreme heat might inactivate the bacteria.

They also advise to consume immediately when you add it to food.

Capsules
VSL#3 probiotic capsules can be swallowed whole or even openedif you wish. You can then mixed in cold water, drink or soft food, just like the powder in packets.

The main difference is that the capsules contain 112 billion strains, where as the packets contain 450 billion strains.

Select which is best for you based on convenience and dosage required.

How long is it safe to take VSL probiotics?

It’s absolutely safe take VSL#3  probiotics for as long as you wish. You can use VSL every day for as long as you needed to reduce symptoms or even eliminate and control the digestive or other problems you may be experiencing.

There is no danger in taking VSL3 with any type of medicinal drugs.

Remember, that if you happen to be taking antibiotics at the same time as you’re taking VSL3, it’s best to take the probiotics in between antibiotic doses so that you get the best effect.

If you need help with how much to take and for how long, ask your health care practitioner. One rule of thumb is to start with minimal dosage and slowly build up the amount you take until you get a reduction of symptoms. Then stay at that dosage for severl weeks.

I thought that VSL3 contains dairy. Then I heard that it’s dairy free? Which is correct?

Prior to January 31st, 2016, VSL3 did, in fact, contain dairy. The formulation was the one researched by Dr Claudio De Simone that produced over 60 research studies supporting the effectiveness of this VSL#3 formula for use by people with ulcerative colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome IBS and even pouchitis.

Pouchitis is an inflammatory condition that often arises in those people who have had a total removal by surgery of the large intestine and rectum. The lowest part of the small intestine is connected to the anus to create a pouch that can store and eliminate stools.

The inflammation of the pouch can lead to an increase in having to go to the bathroom more often, abdominal cramping or bloating, pain and even blood in the stool. These patients are very happy to have found a probiotic that prevents or controls pouchitis.

After January 31st, 2016, VSL#3 was taken over by Alfasigma and they started manufacturing a dairy free version of the original formula. So any VSL#3 manufactured after January 31, 2016 is dairy free.

How long do you need to wait before you can see VSL#3 helping to reduce symptoms?

Generally speaking, VSL#3 literature indicates that it takes up to 1 week to become established in the digestive tract.

A study shows that that the maximum bacterial colonization occurs withing 20 days.

This high level maintains stable as long as you continue to take VSL#3 daily.

After daily intake is interrupted, the strains of VSL#3 are able to survive in the gut for up to 3 weeks.

Is it best to take VSL#3 Probiotics first thing in the morning on an empty stomach?

It’s best to take VSL#3 with food.

What helps to keep the potency of VSL probiotics?

  • The capsule bottle has a new and improved patented cap. This cap doesn’t let any wet or heat or even light enter the bottle. It also stops any contaminants from entering the bottle. I started taking VSL and now I have symptoms of bloating. Why is that?

Sometimes you’ll find that bloating will happen for the first few days when you begin taking VSL#3 probiotics. This is because your digestive microbiome is changing. This is usually only for a short period of time. You can always reduce the amount you are taking daily if that happens, open the capsule or take a portion o fthe packet. Then once it settles down, start to increase the amount until you get relief of your symptoms.

Yes, it is safe for children.
VSL#3 is Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS).

VSL is very expensive. Is it really better than other probiotics on the market?

There are 450 billion strains in the packets and 112 billion strains in the capsules. These are extremely high in comparison to most other probiotics.  This high potency probiotic is significant as the chances of survival is great.

The formula consists of eight different strains of live bacteria that have been carefully cultivated and mixed in a special ratio that maximizes the probiotic content.

Its both the highest number of bacteria and the unique choice of the particular researched strains that give VSL3 it’s high degree of potency.

Some say that VSL#3 capsules are about 10-100 times* more potent than the average probiotic.
[*Source: AC Nielsen, Dec. 2009. Average bacteria claimed by product manufacturers was between 1 and 10 billion per capsule or tablet]
