Understand Your Thyroid and be Healthy

Suzy Cohen

Suzy Cohen – America’s Most Trusted Pharmacist

Suzie Cohen, author of the invaluable resource book, “Drug Muggers” recently wrote a book called “Thyroid Healthy”. Then she teamed up with integrative medicine physician, Dr David Brownstein to present a series of webinars over a period of 5 days. They interviewed a wide variety of doctors, scientists, and other health care providers who presented their ‘spin’ on the importance as well as the challenges of maintaining healthy thyroid functioning.

Suzy refers to the thyroid as the ‘master gland‘ – the one that governs all the other hormones. When you consider the ramifications that are incurred when the thyroid is not acting efficiently, you will be more inclined to look for an integrative practitioner that every before. Did you know that it’s estimated that 20 million Americans have thyroid disease? The majority of them are women. But here’s the scary part…… ‘more than half of people with a thyroid problem are unaware of their condition.

A thyroid imbalance is not always easy to recognize. Even a minimal thyroid imbalance can significantly impact mental and physical health. Washington based, Kevin Passero, says that even borderline thyroid issues can take a huge toll. He says that we need to take a more proactive stance. Good ways to begin are learning to recognize the symptoms of thyroid disorders and knowing what questions to ask your doctor to be sure of getting the best diagnosis and treatment.

The most common thyroid problems are hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). Hypothyroidism is far more prevalent. Some say it makes up 90% of all thyroid disorders. Passero suggests talking to your doctor and taking an approach that is tailored to each person’s specific needs rather than taking the attitude that one size fits all.

Therefore, its necessary to do extensive lab testing, get feedback from you, the patient  as well as a thorough evaluation of all aspects of your health.

He advises paying attention to three main areas.

1   Thorough testing

Make sure you get the right tests and a proper thyroid evaluation, which should include TSH, free T4, free T3, thyroid antibodies, and reverse T3. For people who are already on thyroid medication, but not getting good results, Passero stresses the importance of a reverse T3 test.

2  Relativity

“The biggest mistake in treatment,” says Passero, “is treating the thyroid in isolation.”  Ask your doctor to take other aspects of the endocrine system into consideration. Adrenal evaluation and female sex hormones are closely related to thyroid function and are a critical part of managing thyroid disease.

3   Appropriate Medication

Each kind of medication has a slightly different effect, so it’s difficult to know beforehand what medication will make you feel your best. If you don’t feel up to par, discuss other medication options with your doctor. Sometimes, the drugs you may be taking for other medical conditions could also be affecting your thyroid medication, so ask your doctor about possible drug interactions.

In the end, even if you have a borderline case, an experienced practitioner will help you fine-tune your hormones and arrive at a better sense of balance.

Optimal health calls for optimal thyroid function.

But most people tend to overtook that, not realizing that if their thyroid is not running smoothly, neither are they.

The thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck.
It acts as the body’s metabolic thermostat.
It controls the body temperature, energy use, as well as the rate of organ function.

Basically, the thyroid affects the operation of all the body processes.
