How Healthy is Your Microbiome?

Your microbiome consists of the 100 trillion microbial cells that you have in your gut. Find out if your’s is healthy today.

It’s an exciting time in gut health. Everyone is talking about their microbiome these days. There’s so much information available about how to improve digestion and how to get more good gut bacteria. There’s also a number of ways you can test your gut to see if anything could be out of balance. This is an important first step in determining your gut health. That’s right, I’m talking about an at home stool test.

The demand for probiotics has increased by leaps and bounds in the past five years making probiotics the number three most commonly used supplement. Sales for fermented foods, kombucha, yogurt, kefir and probiotic fortified products have become one of the fastest growing markets for grocery store and health food retailers. It seems everyone is trying to get more good gut bacteria. One thing that’s often overlooked is finding out what bacteria you currently have in your gut. The most important first step in identifying what’s going on in your gut is to take a stool test.

Thankfully there is a number of good test on the market that can inform you about your gut and help you uncover some reasons why you may be experiencing digestion problems. We recommend Genova Diagnostic Tests to uncover any GI problems and evaluate nutritional deficiencies. Click Here to Read More about the different tests they offer.

Do you sometimes feel bloated, gassy or have stomach pains after eating? It could be over indulgence or one too many holiday cookies, but, it could also be your bodies way of telling you that you need to do some further investigation.

If one or a combination of these symptoms occurs fairly regularly, it warrants further investigation. Taking an at home test is an easy, non-invasive way to detect if there are imbalances in gut bacteria, parasites or even a yeast overgrowth, commonly known as Candida. It’s so easy to do.

What Does an At Home Stool Test Help You Determine?

  • Reasons for nausea, vomiting and bloating
  • Why you have loss of appetite
  • Abdominal, cramping and diarrhea causes
  • Absorption of nutrients
  • Parasites
  • Infections from bacteria, viruses, or funguses
  • Liver problems
  • Pancreatic function
  • Digestive conditions such as Crohn’s and Colitis

Our favorite for comprehensive gut analysis is the Genova Lab Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis CDSA and Parasitology 2.0.

Another great test from Doctors Data is the Comprehensive Stool Analysis (CSA) w/Parasitology.

Remember, your body may be trying to tell you that there’s a problem in your gut. Take note of your symptoms and don’t delay. Chronic discomfort, excessive gas, and bloating don’t have to be a regular part of your life. Take the home test today to find out more about what’s going on in your gut.

Why Should You Take a Stool Test?

GI symptoms are your bodies way of warning you that something is wrong.

If you have ongoing intestinal symptoms  that’s your body’s way of telling you that your gut is out of balance.

Yes, the signs and symptoms you are experiencing are your body’s warning system. These red flags are asking you to pay attention to your body. The very first step you should take is an easy to do, ‘at home’ stool test.

Did you know that Gastrointestinal or GI problems are usually the most common reasons that people look for medical attention.

Stool testing gives you invaluable information about what’s going on in your gut. Maybe you are experiencing symptoms like diarrhea, gas, constipation or bloating. If so, it’s a good idea to find out what’s going on in your gut so you know where to start in repairing it.

Without this valuable information it’s a guessing game and you can waste hundreds of dollars trying different protocols to heal your gut, without getting to know what the cause is.

We recommend Doctor’s Data Comprehensive Stool Analysis to help you understand the underlying reasons for your symptoms.

How is Dr.’s Data Test Different From Other At Home Stool Tests?

Doctor’s Data labs have been examining stool samples  for over 40 years. Doctor’s Data became the first lab in the functional medicine industry to introduce MALDI-TOF (Matrix- Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight) as a method of identifying bacteria and yeast in stool culture. MALDI-TOF works by measuring the unique “fingerprints” of our microorganisms. This spectra is then compared to a reference database for verification and identification.

What Makes the MALDI-TOF a Superior Measure for Stool Testing?

Doctor’s Data utilizes MALDI-TOF in combination with “high-complexity” culture for rapid, accurate and reliable identification of hundreds of gastrointestinal bacterial and yeast species, and even subspecies. The MALDI-TOF reference database is the most expansive and is growing by about 100 species per month. To date they have identified over 180 yeast species; 65 of these are Candida alone. This ability to differentiate is extremely important since some patients may have up to 6 or 7 different strains.

All of Doctors Data CSA tests use the MALDI-TOF technology. Heres what Sandra Richter, Director of Bacteriology in the departments of Clinical Pathology and Molecular Pathology at The Cleveland Clinic, had to say about it. “It is clear that this is a giant step forward in the accuracy and speed of organism identification routinely reported by the lab.”

Next time you need antibiotics try anti-fungals instead

anti-fungals instead of antibiotics

Try Anti-fungals Instead of Antibiotics

Unfortunately, antibiotics prescribed today have serious side effects that can take a long time for you to recover from. They wreak havoc on your gut when the good bacteria is wiped out along with the bad bacteria. The good news is that there are many natural anti-fungals that can help you fight bad bacteria and pathogens.

A few of the anti-fungals that we love are Oregano Oil, Berberis and Citracidal. It is well known that before the discovery of antibiotics, herbs were used to disinfect wounds and treat bacteria infections. Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, practiced for 1000’s of years, relies heavily on the chemical compounds found in plants.

We love using anti-fungals along with probiotics to treat digestion symptoms which are caused by bad bacteria, overgrowth of yeast or even parasites. Here’s how these anti-fungals can help you without compromising your health down the road.

Oregano oil

Oregano oil protects you against both bacterial infections as well as viral infections. The antibacterial effects of oregano don’t eliminate all the good gut bacteria the way antibiotics do. Here’s how you can use this “natural antibiotic.”

  • Prevents Viral Infections
  • Eliminates intestinal worms when taken internally
  • Keeps away lice, bed bugs, mosquitoes, and fleas when applied externally
  • Eliminates candida yeast
  • Eliminates UTI’s
  • Treats toe nail fungus
  • Treats sinus infections and allergies

*Oregano essential oil can cause irritation of the skin and mucus membrane if taken in high concentration or dosages. Always dilute oregano oil if taken internally with juice or water. When applied to the skin mix with coconut oil or another carrier oil.

Citricidal Grapefruit Seed Extract

This extract is derived from the bitter seeds and cell membranes of a grapefruit. It’s been discovered that the extract is a powerful anti-fungal and has anti microbial properties as well against pathogens like E Coli and Salmonella. Read more of what this powerful little seed can do:

  • Fights pathogenic organisms like bacteria, fungi and viruses
  • Fights Candida
  • Kills Antibiotic-Resistant UTIs

Berberine

  • Prevents candida species from producing an enzyme called lipase which they use to help colonize in the gut
  • Treats bacterial diarrhea
  • Counteract effects of pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi and worms
  • Eradicates Chlamydia
  • Helps keep stools regular
  • Reduces bad LDL cholesterol
  • Helps to maintain healthy blood sugar levels
  • Treats eye infections

Consider using anti-fungals if you are experiencing digestion symptoms that are not going away with probiotics. Even better, take a stool test and find out what’s going on in your gut. You might need anti-fungal therapy that will work together with your probiotics to restore the normal balance to your gut.

This Is What You Need To Do To Detox

It is that time of year when everyone is thinking or talking about detoxing. Some people like to do fasts, others juice cleanses. Everyone’s heard about the Master Cleanse, that’s the one where you drink water mixed with lemon, cayenne and maple syrup. A lot of doctors actually think the the Mater Cleanse is dangerous as it doesn’t give the body the nutrients it needs to support it. While you detox it’s important to nourish your body and support your liver function.

What if I told you that you could detox without adhering to a special diet?

That sounds good, right? Well, you can actually. You can detox easily and effectively while you continue to eat a balanced diet. Of course you should still eat a clean diet, with hormone free and chemical free proteins and organic fruits and vegetables. It goes without saying that you should also avoid sugar and processed foods while you are detoxing.

How can you detox in a safe, healthy way without starving yourself or depriving yourself of key nutrients?

One way to do it is by using homeopathics to detox. The HVS Homeopathic line was created 30 years ago by Dr. Kratz. His formulations are designed to rid your body of toxins at a cellular level. Each formulation is prepared with five potencies in a pure water base, totally harmless for your body and without side effects.

It was after Allen Kratz, PharmD explored the depths of both conventional and complementary medicine that he developed a therapeutic line of formulas to eliminate harmful substances from the body such as heavy metals, chemicals, parasites, molds and tobacco. Down the road these toxins may contribute to health problems.

How do homeopathics work?

The homeopathic line from Kratz is made up of individualized formulas called Detoxosodes. It works under the assumption that the “toxin” in the formula will affect the body by “training” it to recognize the harmful substance and ultimately purging it. The formulas contain small amounts of the substance that have been targeted for elimination.

The usual protocol is to take the Detoxosode for about two weeks to clear the unwanted substance and return your body back to homeostasis.

Dr. Kratz also designed Adaptosode and Biosode homeopathic formulations to serve as a support system while you detox. The Adaptasode formulas are also used for relief of fatigue, weariness, and to assist your body systems while purging these nasty invaders. The Biosode formulas are designed to support cell regeneration during this process.

The formulations created by HVS can be chosen to customize a cleanse.  Click Here for a complete list of HVS Detoxosode formulas.

It is important that you are working with a health care practitioner to guide you in this process. Call us and we can recommend which formulas are right for you. The homeopathic line of HVS Detoxosodes are only available by phone oder.

If homeopathics are not right for you Garden of Life has a great one week Raw Cleanse Kit.

If you suspect you have toxins or parasites that are at the cause of your symptoms it’s a good idea to take a home test to get to the bottom of what unwanted organisms are in your system. Click here for the compete line of Doctors Data  and Genova at home tests.

How To Get the Most Out Of Your At Home Gut Test.

A yearly gut test is a really good idea if you want to know things about what resides in your gut. Your gut health is the most essential component to disease prevention and longevity.

What's in your gut?Your immune system lives in your gut, and most importantly your body’s ability to produce hormones is affected by your gut. Essentially you need to make sure it’s running properly before you have any symptoms. That’s why a yearly gut test ought to be done as a check up.

A great test to take for yearly maintenance is the Doctors Data Comprehensive Stool Analysis Test.  or Genova Labs’ Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis.

Maybe you have constipation, gas, bloating, brain fog, diarrhea or chronic stomach pain. This could be due to a bacteria, yeast or a fungal overgrowth, or maybe even a parasite that you picked up on your travels. A gut test will also indicate that you may have a bacteria imbalance and need more good bacteria. We suggest Genova Comprehensive Parasitology or Doctors Data Comprehensive Parasitology Test. Both companies offer similar labs.

If you’ve already had a gut test and found your good bacteria levels to be low you may have started taking prebiotics and probiotics. If it’s been at least three months since you’ve been taking them, now is a good time to recheck.

You want to make sure that your probiotics are working to bring in more good bacteria and it’s actually taking up residency in your gut. A gut recheck ought to be a way to ensure that you’re taking the right probiotic for you and also let you know if you need prebiotic fiber to fertilize the probiotic.

If your previous assessment results have shown that you have candida, and you followed a protocol and change of diet, you can retest to make sure the protocol has worked and the candida is under control.  At this point you will know if you should continue with the protocol.

Do you know that there is a specific parasite test? There’s a great one from Genova Diagnostics.

If you tested positive for parasites you most likely followed a protocol to cleanse the digestive tract and then recolonized your gut and strengthened your immune system. Once the treatment protocol is finished you need to retest to ensure the parasites are gone.
