Over Indulging During the Holidays

Whether you are spending time with family or celebrating the holiday season with friends, this time of year is often when a healthy lifestyle may get challenged. But, healthy holiday eating is possible.

The best way to get through the holidays without kicking up a response from your immune system, over indulging or gaining a few extra pounds is to have a plan.

Just the other day I read, that according to a year-long study of nearly 200 people, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the average weight gain during the six-week span from Thanksgiving to New Year’s is just under one pound. (Wow…I would have thought it was more!!)
And, according to the National Institutes of Health, holiday eating and over indulging can result in an extra pound or two every year.

So, thought I would share my few tips for healthy holiday eating.

* Before heading out…prepare your mind and body for yummy temptations.

* Never go out hungry. Eat a light snack (like raw vegetables or a piece of fruit) to curb your appetite. You will be less tempted to over-indulge. A product that I love and recommend taking before the festivities begin, is Chromium Picolinate by Metagenics. It helps regulate sugar metabolism and makes you less likely to crave sugars (and candy.)

* Exercise is a must. It helps relieve holiday stress, prevent weight gain & helps with digestion.

* Eat until your tummy is satisfied, not stuffed. Eat small portions and enjoy each mouthful.

* Be careful with beverages.Non-alcoholic beverages can be full of sugar & calories. Alcohol is full of sugar, can lessen inhibitions & induce overeating.

* Be realistic. Don’t try to lose pounds during the holidays, instead try to maintain your current weight.

* When 2014 comes round, start by doing a cleanse. I suggest Garden of Life Raw Cleanse. Honestly, it does not taste too good, but you will feel great once its over. And will repeat it again.

With all that being said…I now need to follow my own advice.

Enjoy the holidays, make time for activity, bring your healthy recipes to the party, and don’t restrict yourself from enjoying your favorite holiday foods. In the long run, your mind and body will thank you.
