Ashwagandha the Adaptogenic Herb

What are some Ashwaganda Benefits?

  • Boost immunity
  • Reduce anxiety and depression
  • Stabilize blood sugar
  • Reduce brain cell degeneration
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Combat effects of stress
  • Increase stamina and endurance

Ashwagandha for Stress Reduction
In a clinical trial, patients having chronic stress took 300 mg capsules of Ashwagandha or a placebo twice daily for 2 months. The participants were then asked to answer three questionnaires they had also filled out at the beginning of the study. The difference in their scores was remarkable.

Patients who were part of  the Ashwagandha group showed reduction in symptoms of chronic stress. Reduction in the severity stress score was 44%, physical symptoms score was 76.1%, anxiety and insomnia score was 69.7%, social dysfunction score 68.1% and severe depressive symptoms score 79.3%.

People who took Ashwagandha had fewer physical symptoms of anxiety and depression, felt calmer and slept better. Their productivity also increased.

Ashwagandha for Anti-anxiety
In studies conducted on rats, Ashwagandha acted as a mood stabilizer and had an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect on rats suffering from anxiety and depression. Its effect was comparable with that of diazepam, a standard anxiolytic drug.

In other studies it was also observed that Ashwagandha induces a calming anxiolytic effect that is comparable to the drug Lorazepam in all three standards. Ashwagandha also exhibits an antidepressant effect, comparable with that induced by imipramine.

Ashwagandha for Weight management
A 2016 study of body weight management followed 52 subjects under chronic stress. Half the group received ashwagandha root extract and half received a placebo. Over 8 weeks both groups were assessed for food cravings, serum cortisol, body weight and body mass index. The ashwagandha group showed improved scores in all categories, while the placebo group did not.

Ashwagandha for Better Sleep
Ashwagandha has been studied for it’s use as a remedy in insomnia caused by stress, anxiety and depression. It works by binding to GABA receptors. It produces calming, anti‐anxiety, anti‐convulsive, highly‐stabilizing effects. Excessive neuronal activity leads to restlessness and insomnia, but GABA in the brain inhibits the number of nerve cells that fire, and helps to reduce anxiety, uplift mood, and induce sleep.

Ashwagandha for Brain Fog
When used in a trial for those suffering with beginning symptoms of brain fog, a 2017 study of 50 adults examined the safety and efficacy of ashwagandha in memory improvement and cognitive function. While the placebo group showed no particular improvement in cognitive function, the ashwagandha group tested better in immediate and general memory, improved executive function, attention and information processing speed.

If you are Stressed you must try Ashwagandha-the Powerful Adaptogenic Herb

ashwagandha is an adaptogenicAshwagandha, is an adaptogenic herb popular in Ayurvedic medicine that has shown incredible results for lowering cortisol and balancing thyroid hormones. This herb also benefits your adrenals and helps to prevent adrenal fatigue. Adaptogenic herbs work with your body to bring you back into balance whether your levels are high or low.

In a recent article published by Dr. Frank Lipman he explains how these herbs work; “Adaptogens work a bit like a thermostat. When the thermostat senses that the room temperature is too high, it brings it down and when the temperature is too low, it brings it up. Adaptogens can calm you down and boost your energy at the same time without overstimulating. By supporting adrenal function, they can help counteract the adverse effects of stress and normalize body imbalances. They help cells eliminate toxic byproducts of the metabolic process, access more energy and utilize oxygen more efficiently.”

I Love Ashwagandha

I am amazed by the results that I have been experiencing since I started using this supplement …. That’s why say ….. I Love Ashwagandha!

AshwagandhaAshwagandha is actually the name of a plant and we use the root and berry for herbal preparation. Actually, the name ‘Ashwagandha’ comes from  Sanskrit – a combination of the word ‘ashva’, meaning horse, and ‘gandha’, meaning smell. The root has a strong aroma that is described as “horse-like.”

Ashwagandha is known to assist with reducing anxiety, helping to fall asleep. It is also categorized as an “adaptogen” because its regarded as a general tonic and also aids in helping the body to cope with stress.

Now, some people also started to use Ashwagandha for improving their ability to think and that’s where my experience has flowered. I was so surprised at how effective I have found it to be. So much so,  I started to read more about it.

Here are some of the interesting facts about Ashwagandha:

  • It’s often referred to as “Indian ginseng”. This is because of its rejuvenating properties. Botanically, however, ginseng and Ashwagandha are not at all unrelated.
  • Ashwagandha belongs to the same family as the tomato. They call it a plump shrub with oval leaves and yellow flowers. It bears red fruit about the size of a raisin.
  • It is native to the dry regions of India, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. However, today is also grown in more mild climates, including the United States.
  • In India, Ashwagandha is known as the “strength of the stallion” since it has traditionally been used to strengthen the immune system after illness.

Why Use Ashwagandha?

Dr Deepak Chopra lists these benefits:

  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of energy
  • Difficulty concentrating

He also says that “use of the Ayurvedic herb, Ashwagandha can help alleviate these symptoms and support an energetic and rejuvenating sense of well being”.

Dr Josh Axe tells us that there have been over 200 studies on Ashwagandha’s ability to:

  • Improve thyroid function
  • Treat adrenal fatigue
  • Reduce anxiety and depression
  • Combat effects of stress
  • Increase stamina and endurance
  • Prevent and treat cancer
  • Reduce brain cell degeneration
  • Stabilize blood sugar
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Boost immunity

When I looked over this list, the one benefit that resonated is Ashwagandha’s ability to reduce brain cell degeneration. Dr Axe goes on to explain:

“Emotional, physical, and chemical stress can all have damaging effects to the brain and nervous system. Recent research has proven Ashwagandha is more than a stress reliever, it also protects the brain from degeneration and improves symptoms of Alzheimer’s, depression, and anxiety.”

“One of the main reasons ashwagandha is so effective at healing the brain has to do with its powerful antioxidants that destroy free radicals that cause aging. A study published in Phytotherapy Research explains these benefits.”

‘Several studies have revealed that natural antioxidants, such as vitamin E, vitamin C and beta-carotene, may help in scavenging free radicals generated during the initiation and progression of this [Alzheimer’s] disease. But we found Ashwagandha afforded lipid peroxidation inhibitory effects more potent than commercial antioxidants.’

Researchers at the National Brain Research Centre found that mice with Alzheimer’s were unable to retain what they learned, but after 20 days of supplementing with ashwagandha, this improved significantly. The results of the study found a reduction in amyloid plaques (these cause degradation of the brain).

Now, let me share my personal experience – it is just like the mice! I started using Pure Encapsulation’s Ashwagandha – 500 mg 2 x daily. After just a few weeks I noticed that, as I would often do, I tried to recall ‘something’ and I couldn’t remember it! Could have been a name, a place, where I put something etc. Then, just after a few minutes, the correct answer would come to me.

When it first happened, I blew it off as a ‘one time fluke’, but then it started to happen consistently ….aha…. this is really happening …now, I can say without a doubt, that it is happening all the time now. I just give it a few minutes, a sure enough, I remember!

What a pleasure! Instead of getting all concerned that my aging brain is deteriorating
quicker than I would like to admit, I know I’m doing something very beneficial to reverse the process.

FYI – Dr Chopra recommends 600-1000 mg to be taken 2 times daily,. So I’m gong to ‘up the daily dose’ as well and see what happens. I’ll keep you posted.

Ashwagandha for Maximizing Brain Power!

Ashwagandha for maximizing memory and brain power!
Have you ever had episodes of forgetfulness?
Difficulty thinking and remembering?
It’s frustrating, isn’t it?

Dr Ron JahnerOur brains are the most complex structures in the universe. Did you know there are more interconnections in your brain than there are atoms in the universe! It’s true.

Everything we do in life is regulated by our brain function. In fact, to a great extent, it is no exaggeration to say that our health and quality of life is a direct result of the quality of our brain activity. So maintaining healthy brain function is an absolute essential for all of us at any age, in any activity of life. And yet…

Do you realize that ….

your brain may be deteriorating this very moment and you wouldn’t know it?

In fact, this mental decline may be so insidious in most of us that our brains may                                    actually be wasting away significantly faster than our bodies!

Have you ever…

  • Lost your keys and can’t remember what you did with them just a few hours ago?
  • Left the stove on without realizing it?
  • Stared at a simple form wondering what to do next?
  • Agonized over even a simple decision?
  • Worried about keeping up at work or school?

Wonder if you can continue to live on your own if your brain function deteriorates even more? You are not alone!

Brain fog and forgetfulness is a growing epidemic in the Western world.
And, it’s not just an “old-age” issue anymore!

In fact, research indicates that 76% of people in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s are reporting episodes of brain fog forgetfulness. Unfortunately, by the time we are 65, over 51% of us have a degree of brain deficiency that is enough to  affect our lifestyle and ability to function independently.  That is unacceptable!!

Well, maybe you think, “This must be happening in some third world countries but not here in the United States where we have supermarkets and plenty of good food!”
Think again.

The Journal of Public Health published a 30 year study involving 16 countries where researchers showed an increase in mental decline in adults under 74. But the bigger impact for us is that of the 16 countries evaluated, the US showed the highest increase. 66% in men and 92% in women!

Why is it happening?
Have you ever wondered?

  • Why are so many people, at ever younger ages, experiencing issues with their brain function?
  • What causes us to lose our thinking ability as we age?
  • How many of us get lost running simple errands or confused traveling through airports or highways?
  • How many serious accidents are caused by forgetfulness and brain fog?
  • How many houses burn down when stoves are left on or matches are dropped        absent-mindedly?

Is this normal?!!!

  • Is it necessary to lose your ability to think and remember as you get older?
  • Are our children condemned to be condemned to a life sentence of brain fog and unclear thinking?
  • Must we all end up in nursing homes because we can’t think clearly enough to live on our own?

Is there anything we can do about it?  The answer is YES!!

Thanks to breakthroughs in the nutraceutical world, we can safely and easily roll back, yes! We can roll back …

  1. mental decline
  2. improve our memory
  3. increase beneficial relaxation brain wave activity
  4. get rid of brain fog,
  5. improve recall, and even,
  6. wake up brain cells that have been sleeping!

AshwagandhaFortunately, medical research has come a long way since we were told in medical school that “brain and nerve tissue never heals”!

Now we know about amazing nutritional substances that can restore cognitive function and an incredible phenomenon call “brain plasticity” that can literally turn back the clock on brain fog and forgetfulness!

We now know from current medical research that the brain can and does repair and heal and “rewire” around past injury and trauma, even as we age!

Ashwagandha is one of them. Try it for a month and you’ll notice the difference.
