What Are Enzymes?

Enzymes are made up of protein molecules which are produced in animal and plant cells. The basic cell processes are carried out by these enzymes which enables the body to function properly.

These protein molecules accelerate the rate of a chemical reaction occurring in our body The  food we eat breaks down much faster in the presence of enzymes rather than without them and these protein molecules still remain unchanged in the process.

According to research, there has been a link found in patients with chronic disease and lower energy levels to the lower concentration of enzymes in blood and urine samples and tissue culture.

It has been questioned whether it is the low levels that cause such pathological states or, its the pathological state that in turn lowers the enzymatic concentration in a human body. The result found by the researchers are rather intriguing.

 The cause and effect result which the researchers found, is that, it’s the low level of enzymes in our body which leads to the malfunctions in  our body process and hence the suffering from disease rather than the disease causing the drop in enzyme concentration.

 Why are enzymes important?

They are the core elements in our cells without which the most important and very basic chemical reactions wouldn’t occur in our body. From the reactions which enable us to breathe to provide oxygen to breaking down food that we eat so that we get energy out of it. The movement of our limbs, our thinking process everything and every step requires enzymes to be carried out normally. Hence they are essential for our survival.

 Enzymes do the labor work in our body. Conducting various process like the synthesis of proteins, fats and other substances to the elimination of harmful substances from our body. They also act as our transport system. Carrying molecules from one cell in our body to other. The body has a rich supply of enzymes when we are young as more and more are synthesized. But as we age, the levels decrease.This is the reason why we feel so fresh and active in our youth rather than when we get old.

 With the passage of time, slowly and gradually these enzymes lose their efficiency. Initially we don’t even realize these little changes that take place. Like how we won’t tolerate eating spicy food that once we loved to eat or when we get injured during some sports activity we are unable to recover from pain and damage as easily as we used to. We are under stress, the cells undergo biochemical changes which causes disturbance in the cell’s mechanism hence damaging them. Due to this excessive load on cells the production of enzymes is decreased and lesser amount is replaced.

The day to day increase in pollution in our environment further disrupts the balance of production and damages the immune system. We find them in raw and fresh vegetables, fresh fruits and meats. When we cook these raw foods, unfortunately the heat destroys them. This is why we are often short of the essential enzymes that we need.

Digestive and food enzymes has same functions, which is to digest the food so that smaller molecules can then be absorbed into our blood after passing through the intestinal wall. The difference between them is that digestive enzymes are synthesiized in our body but food enzymes are not synthesized by our body organs.
