Crohn’s Disease and Gas

Many people experience gas, but most of the time it’s not very uncomfortable. For Crohn’s sufferers, however, gas and boating can lead to debilitating cramps, unpleasant experiences eating food, and the desire to stay inside and avoid day-to-day activities.

If you suffer from Crohn’s and live with severe bouts of gas, understanding how to manage your diet is crucial. After speaking with your Crohn’s doctor about your symptoms, he or she may suggest you alter your diet with Crohn’s while exploring treatment for your condition. Learning what foods to eat, and which ones to avoid, will help lower your chances of Crohn’s complications.

Bloating, Gas, and Crohn’s

Sometimes, bloating and gas is worse for Crohn’s sufferers when the individual is experiencing a flare-up. Inflammation in the gut causes the colon to swell, which makes it difficult for the body to digest some foods. It, therefore, produces gas while trying to digest what the person has eaten. Gas produced in the body can be painful as it passes through the intestines. Gas trapped inside of the intestine can lead to boating.

Foods That Cause Gas

Milk products trigger gas in many Crohn’s patients, perhaps more than any other food. Many people, even if they don’t have IBD, cannot digest the lactose in milk. When an inflamed and compromised gut comes into contact with milk products, the result is often more disastrous than what a healthy person would experience.

Foods with more fructose than glucose can also cause gas in Crohn’s sufferers. Examples of these foods include apples, pears, watermelon, melon, and guava. Fruit bars are also often high in fructose, especially those that contain dried apple or pear. Dried fruit is hard to digest for many Crohn’s patients as well, because of its high fructose content.

Better choices for Crohn’s sufferers who like fruit are stone fruits, such as peaches, apricots, and nectarines. It’s advisable that Crohn’s suffers cut back on foods that are known to cause gas until they get their conditions under control.
