The Problem with Antibiotics

Antibiotic pills

Relatively recently in the news it has been report that the world is on the cusp of a “post antibiotic era”.  This statement was made by scientists after they found certain strains of bacteria that are COMPLETELY resistant to antibiotics.

It’s now expected that these strain of resistant bacteria will spread around the world and increase the number of untreatable infections (not a jolly thought right?!).

The discovery and use of antibiotics has played a major role in helping to massively reduce death and illness from infections over the past years, but we have now reached a stage where they are just being used too much.  At the slightest sign of a running nose or a sore throat, people are being prescribed antibiotics when some rest, sleep, and a much better diet is what they really need.

Why’s that a Problem?

Well not only do antibiotics kill of the bad bacteria in your gut but also all of the good (which is something you don’t want to be doing).  In fact, our good bacteria can virtually be completed eliminated by a single course of antibiotics and even years later our gut bacteria can still be affected.

This is why I’m hesitant to use antibiotics unless it’s really necessary (which it can sometimes be), and almost always recommend that someone supplements for a short

across the western world (and the ever increasing rates of Inflammatory Bowel Disease) are the overuse of antibiotics, especially from a very early age.

It’s this overuse that has likely encouraged the growth of the antibiotic resistant bacteria which the world is now facing.

So what can be done? The truth is, I don’t think anyone is quite sure.

But I do know that an important factor in making sure that YOU stay as healthy as possible is to only use antibiotics when they are REALLY needed, and if your doctor tries to give you them ask them if that is REALLY the only option (quite often they are prescribing them because they believe that’s what the patient wants. Most people are happier walking away with an antibiotics prescription than simple advice to rest up, eat well, get some sleep and “in a few days it’ll pass” prescription).

Optimising the health of your gut bacteria is so important and simply minimising the use of antibiotics isn’t the only way to do that.

Other Factors that Play a Part In Gut Health

Consuming foods you are intolerant or sensitive towards
Toxin exposure
If you were breast fed
If you were born naturally or via C section
Our levels of cleanliness
Using appropriate supplementation, including probiotics

Obviously many of those factors are still within our control and are many of the factors I work on with my private 1:1 clients who I help to beat the symptoms of Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis.
