Lactobacillus Fermentum ME – 3 Boosts Glutathione

Lactobacillus Fermentum  ME – 3

Lactobacillus Fermentum ME – 3 strain has a long history of being studied for well over 20 years. This particular lactobacillus probiotic strain is very unique and valuable. It is known to produce glutathione naturally in the body. Glutathione is renowned for its antioxidant function. Not only that, but it also helps with detoxification and support the activities of the immune system.

Glutathione is called the body’s “Master Antioxidant.” This is because it is utilized by every single cell in the human body. It is always needed for support to keep the immune system healthy. It’s easy for cells to become depleted of glutathione. That’s why the cells constantly need to be provided with additional glutathione.

Although its necessary to have healthy glutathione levels, it’s very hard to supplement it. There is even some research to say that glutathione breaks down during digestion. That’s why Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 is so important. What the body is receiving is a supplement with the probiotic. Then, it’s this probiotic that produces glutathione and maintains healthy glutathione levels from within. This is a major shift in how it is that the body can be supported by adequate amounts of glutathione.

Marika Mikelsaar, MD, PhD and her team of research scientists are the ones who isolated Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 in 1995. It has a patent as a lactic acid bacteria strain that is used under an exclusive license agreement with the University of Tartu, Estonia.

She received the European Union award for the discovery of L. fermentum ME-3. Before she started Lacillus Fermentum ME – 3 research, she was involved with the Russian Space Program where she was investigating the intestinal microflora of Russian astronauts. Once she isolated L. fermentum ME-3 there has been a lot of research into figuring out what the health benefits of the lactobacillus-related probiotic really are.

Mihkel Zilmer, MD, PhD also works at the University of Tartu in Estonia and his focus has been on how this probiotic promotes glutathione, our master antioxidant. The fact that this probiotic showed signs of boosting glutathione was unexpected. This is not typical of probiotics which are usually connected to digestive health.

Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 improves glutathione through 3 Different ways. Firstly, it takes any glutathione molecules that are available from it’s surrounding environment, acting like a sponge. Then, secondly, it synthesizes glutathione itself* and lastly, it regenerates reduced glutathione known as GSSG, back into its active state which is called GSH*

Lactobacillus fermentum ME – 3 excels in 3 area of body support:

  • Maintaining a healthy immune system*
  • Supporting the health of cardiovascular tissue*
  • Promoting healthy liver function*
