Crohn’s Disease Diet

Finding ways to control the potential flare-ups that come with a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease can be difficult because the condition affects every patient differently. Some foods can trigger inflammation, while others help to lessen inflammation in the body. There is no specific nutrition plan or diet that works for every patient. However, affected individuals can take steps to create Crohn’s disease diet plans that work well for them by speaking to their doctors and considering the information below:

Foods to Avoid

Nuts: Due to the hard nature of most nuts, it can be difficult to chew them enough to get them to the consistency that the intestines would have an easy time digesting.

The Skins of Fruits and Vegetables: While individuals who don’t have Crohn’s disease can benefit from ingesting the fiber found in fruits and vegetables, that same fiber can cause problems for individuals who suffer from Crohn’s.

Popcorn: Because popcorn is a whole grain, it’s harder for the body to digest. Patients with Crohn’s disease should avoid foods that are difficult to digest, particularly whole grains.

Foods to Eat or Increase                 

Fluids: While not exactly food, fluids are very important to an individual who has the chronic diarrhea that often comes with Crohn’s disease. It is very important that patients make sure they have enough fluids to avoid potential kidney stones.

Almond Milk: For Crohn’s patients who also have lactose intolerance, it’s important to avoid dairy. Almond milk and other nut milks are great options.

Eggs: If you’re looking for easily digestible protein, eggs are a great option.

Oatmeal: The soluble fiber in oatmeal is easier on the digestive tract than other grains. Soft-cooked oatmeal absorbs the water in your intestine and passes slowly.

For those who do not absorb nutrients easily due to their condition, doctors often recommend a high-protein diet, getting at least three meals and snacks in each day and taking vitamin and mineral supplements.
