Alcohol, Prebiotics and Probiotics

When you drink alcohol, you increase the risk of gastritis and peptic ulcers, which are like open sore inside your gut. What happens is that alcohol increases the amount of acid that your stomach produces. It’s one of the main reasons for getting gastritis. You can develop symptoms like indigestion, nausea and vomiting. Then alcohol can also disturb the mucous lining in your stomach, and this will cause inflammation and even bleeding.

Besides that ulcers that develop not only affect your stomach but also your small intestine or even your esophagus. When the peptic ulcer is found in the small intestine, they call it a duodenal ulcer and often causes a lot of pain.

Generally speaking, occasional drinking will not cause a problem, but excessive drinking can. It causes an imbalance in you gut and make you more prone to develop an ulcer.
Probiotics are often used to help counteract the damage caused by alcohol. It will help restore optimal levels of beneficial bacteria in your digestive system

The disruptions in your gut microbiome can result in small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and it can also lead to increased intestinal permeability (Leaky Gut). What needs to happen is to be able to change the ratio of the bad bacteria to beneficial bacteria in your intestines. Otherwise certain molecules “leak through” your intestines into your bloodstream.

Everyone seems to be talking about leaky gut and SIBO as they have becomes known as the major causes of a great deal of chronic lifestyle-related diseases and even autoimmune conditions. One example is alcohol induced fatty liver disease (ALD).

Fortunately, taking probiotics and prebiotics at the same time as alcohol consumption can have a protective effect on the damages alcohol can have on our liver. See the  study on rats that supports this information. 

Understand that the probiotic and prebiotic intake seems to simply buffer the negative effects but is doesn’t stop the damage from being created.
