Colostrum is the thin, yellowish fluid secreted by the mammary glands of mammalian mothers during the first 24-48 hours after birth. Colostrum is taken from dairy cows with 24 hours after the birth of a calf in the United States.

Only dairy cows that meet USDA health standards and have been raised on a ranch with feed supplemented with nutrients can supply Colostrum.

The calf requires four gallons of the nine that the cow produces. A USDA certified dairy collects the remaining Colostrum. The Colostrum is then frozen. Then it is taken to a processing plant and carefully thawed and evaluated for quality as well as immunoglobulins content. At this point about 30% of the Colostrum is rejected. The fat is then removed. Colostrum is then dried at low heat.

It is important to note that the Colostrum is repeatedly tested during processing to ensure freedom from bacterial contamination.
