General Nutritional Support
Essential fatty acids, a part of the PUFA family (polyunsaturated
fatty acid), are known as the "essential fats". Omega-3 and
Omega-6 fatty acids are vital to health and can not be reproduced
by the human body - they must be obtained from diet.
The Omega-3 long chain fatty acids, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)
and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), are found almost uniquely in
foods of marine origin. It is the long chain omega-3’s that the
body needs to synthesize and ensure proper body function.
Clinical studies in the past 30 years have regarded Omega-3 fatty
acids as protective, therapeutic and essential for growth and
development throughout the human lifecycle.
Borage oil, an Omega-6 fatty acid derived from the plant, Borage
officnalis, is the most concentrated source of GLA (gamma-linolenic
acid). GLA is beneficial for skin moisture and has been popularly
used by woman suffering from pre-menstrual syndrome.
Omega-3 fatty acids and GLA from Borage Oil as a combined
formula may have a calming effect by increasing the amount of
the body’s beneficial anti-inflammatory prostaglandins of the series
1 and 3. Omega-3 fatty acids and GLA together provide optimal
nutritional support and are "essential" throughout all stages of life.
Pro EFA is an Omega-3 (from fish oil) and Omega-6 (from
Borage oil) combination. Each 1000 mg soft gel capsule
provides EPA, DHA, and GLA, which are important for
proper cell signaling and membrane flexibility. The New
ProEFA formulation has been enhanced with advanced lipid
stabilizing antioxidants, added vitamin E and has natural
lemon oil added. 90 soft gel capsules (1000mg)

There are two main types of Essential Fatty Acids:
- the omega-3 fatty acids
- the omega-6 series
Both types are necessary, and might help with a number of different health conditions. The numbers (and 3) indicate the number of carbon atoms on the main chain of the structure. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in a wide range of foods and especially in vegetables and grains. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish, flaxseed and spinach.
One of the main flaws in western diet is the imbalance between the intake of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids. The ideal relationship, according to the European Union, is 4:1, but the average relationship amongst Europeans is 5:1, and in persons who do not eat fish 2 times weekly, the relationship may be 10:1 or even worse, 20:1. This imbalance leads to over expression of harmful eicosanoids in the body, and they enhance the risk of chronic diseases and degeneration.
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are the main structural components of the body’s cell membranes. Therefore, a balanced intake of fatty acids is necessary for healthy cell function. EFAs cannot be synthesized by the body and must be provided through diet and supplementation. Essential fatty acids are the precursors of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that the body converts to hormone-like substances called prostaglandins.
Prostaglandins play an active role in the body’s inflammation response processes and promote healthy cell development. Essential fatty acids are critical to four primary body functions: energy production, maintaining body temperature, insulating nerves, and cushioning and protecting body tissues. Prostaglandins are powerful health "gladiators" cascading through the body performing a wide range of vital health functions
Prostaglandins perform a crucial role in the heart and circulatory system by promoting healthy blood flow to and from the heart, supporting blood vessels. Prostaglandins also promote a healthy immune system and inflammatory response by managing the release of lymphokines, a substance known to activate immune system cells.
