Probiotics: Why are they vital to good health?

By Ann Louise Gittleman

You've no doubt heard the buzz about probiotics - those good bacteria so necessary to good health. Now let me remind everyone why the good bacteria are so important to a strong immune system and good health. Within every human being is a flourishing, living colony of approximately four pounds of bacteria. Most of these bacteria reside in the human digestive tract. Absent a sufficient number of friendly bacteria, known as "probiotics," human life would not exist.

It is important to cultivate and maintain a healthy colony of good bacteria in the Gastro Intstinal tract that is composed of at least 85 percent friendly bacteria and not more than 15 percent bad bacteria. If you don't maintain a healthy colony of microflora in the colon, you are very likely to become ill.

How do I maintain a healthy colon and avoid many digestive ailments? I recommend the regular consumption of Dr Ohhira's Probiotic OMX 12+, a high quality probiotic product from Japan that contains twelve strains of live lactic acid bacteria and a wealth of micronutrient by products.

lichiroh Ohhira, Ph.D., acclaimed for his development of Dr. Ohhira's Probiotics 12 plus, is a renowned, award-winning microbiologist from Okayama University in Japan. Dr. Ohhira has dedicated his life to the study of lactic acid bacteria and to improving human health by ensuring adequate colonies of friendly bacteria in the colon.

Over the years, scientists such as Dr. Ohhira have determined that there are many negative health effects that stem from the loss of probiotics, including the lack of recirculation of female hormones such as estrogen, and the overgrowth of detrimental, disease-causing bacteria and yeasts such as Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Yersinia enterocolitica, Clostridium dificile, etc.

The presence of too few probiotics encourages the production of endotoxins in the GI tract, which contributes to lupus erythematosus, pancreatitis, psoriasis and other skin conditions. A shortage of probiotics allows partially digested proteins to enter the bloodstream contributing to eczema, nervous system disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, and a variety of other immune system disorders.

A loss of probiotics and the subsequent appearance of detrimental microorganisms in the colon contribute to Gastro Intestinal tract problems such as leaky gut syndrome, Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, spastic colon or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), etc. Specific strains of detrimental bacteria are known to cause severe health problems.

For example, E. coli, often found on unwashed produce, may lead to problems with insulin and blood sugar function. Yersinia enterocolitica produces substances that cause the over-production of the thyroid hormone. This harmful bacterium also contributes to autoimmune diseases.

After more than 20 years of thorough research, Dr. Ohhira has scientifically concluded that good health prevails when the friendly bacteria in the gastro intestinal tract are properly colonized and ill health too often is the result of a colony of bad microorganisms. Hence, everyone needs to follow my recommendation to regularly consume Dr. Ohhira's Probiotics 12 plus.

Ann Louise Gittleman is the best selling author of nearly 20 books including "Guess What Came to Dinner" and "The Fat Flush Plan".
