Candida / Candidiasis*

What is Candida Albicans or Candidiasis?

  • Candida Albicans is a yeast that lives in the human digestive system.
  • It has the ability to change from a yeast and become a fungus.
  • As a fungus it functions similarly to any other fungi such as athletes' foot fungus, etc.
  • Candida is kept under control, i.e. at low level, by the friendly and helpful bacteria that live in the digestive tract.
  • The friendly beneficial bacteria feed actually feed on Candida, so a balance in the body is maintained.
  • Unfortunately, antibiotics, birth control pills, cortisone and chemotherapy kill these friendly and helpful bacteria (probiotics) as do street drugs, alcohol, and most junk foods.

The Growth of Yeast in Candida Albicans or Candidiasis

Once the friendly and helpful bacteria have been destroyed, the yeast begins to grow abundantly and literally takes over the digestive system.

If left untreated, it becomes a fungus and grows into a plant-like structure that has roots, called rhizoids.

Rhizoids can penetrate the mucosa or intestinal wall, leaving microscopic holes and allowing toxins, undigested food particles, bacteria and yeast to enter the bloodstream.

This condition is known as Leaky Gut Syndrome.

When the break through of the intestinal walls occurs, it also allows the yeast to travel to other areas of the body e.g. mouth, sinuses, throat, reproductive organs, lungs and skin.

Cortisol Release due to Candida Albicans or Candidiasis

When under stress the adrenals glands will produce the anti-inflammatory hormone Cortisol. If stress is prolonged Cortisol will continue to be released.

Cortisol can lower the immune system and raise blood sugar. Both of these actions increase in Candida Albicans.

The immune response is decreased and allows the Candida previously present in normal amounts to begin to overgrow.

Some evidence indicates that Cortisol may inhibit or kill friendly helpful bacteria like acidophilus which protects us against Candida.

Candida Albicans is particularly noticeable in diabetics as they have higher glucose levels.

Other Causes of Candida Albicans or Candidiasis

Other pathogenic organisms also help Candida to live: Parasites and intestinal worms destroy the friendly and good bacteria that normally eat Candida.

They, along with other harmful bacteria and viruses, also inhibit the normal immune system response in our intestines that would kill Candida.

Your health problems may be related to a yeast infection if you:

  • crave sweets
  • feel sick all over
  • have taken many antibiotics
  • have seen many physicians and have not found help
  • developing food allergies

Millions of people of all ages and both sexes are troubled by disorders related to yeast infection. Yeast related complaints range from digestive disorders, fatigue, headache and depression in adults to ear problems, hyperactivity, attention deficits and autism in children.

The most prevalent chronic health problems in Candida Albicans Candidiasis

  • The most prevalent chronic health problems related to common yeast infection of Candida albicans and other yeast strains include:
  • Digestive problems: colitis, abdominal distension, Heartburn, Indigestion, Belching, Intestinal gas, Mucus in the stools, Hemorrhoids, Craving for sugar, bread or alcohol, Food allergies or food reactions.
  • PMS, Endometriosis (irregular or painful menstruation), Cramps or menstrual irregularities, vaginitis, burning or persistent infections, Painful intercourse.
  • Sexual dysfunction, Loss of sex drive, Impotence
  • Skin conditions: rectal itching, Acne, Hives, Rashes, Itching skin, Eczema, Psoriasis, fungal infections on the skin or nails.

  • Asthma, Cough, Pain or tightness in the chest, Wheezing or shortness of breath.

Some who have candida may develop sensitivity to the environment. Many cannot tolerate the smell of rubber, petroleum products, tobacco, exhaust fumes, and chemical odors.

Yeast related complaints are often worse in damp, muggy or moldy places.

Are Your Health Problems Yeast Connected?

Taken from Dr W Crook MD's Book "The Yeast Connection"

If your answer is yes to any question, check the box in the right hand column. When you've completed the questionnaire, add up the points you've checked. Your score will help you determine the possibility (or probability) that your health problems are connected to yeast infection.

YES

SCORE

1. Have you taken repeated or prolonged courses
of antibacterial drugs?

4

2. Have you been bothered by recurrent vaginal, prostate or urinary infections?

3

3. Do you feel "sick all over," yet the cause hasn't been found?

2

4. Are you bothered by hormone disturbances, including PMS, menstrual irregularities, sexual dysfunction, sugar craving, low body temperature or fatigue?

2

5. Are you unusually sensitive to tobacco smoke, perfumes, colognes and other chemical odors?

2

6. Are you bothered by memory or concentration problems? Do you sometimes feel "spaced out"?

2

7. Have you taken prolonged courses of prednisone or other steroids; or have you taken "the pill" for more than 3 years?

8. Do some foods disagree with you or trigger your symptoms?

10. Does your skin itch, tingle or burn; or is it unusually dry; or are you bothered by rashes?

Scoring for women: If your score is 9 or more, your health problems are probably yeast connected. If your score is 12 or more, your health problems are almost certainly yeast connected.

Scoring for men: If your score is 7 or more, your health problems are probably yeast connected. If your score is 10 or more, your health problems are almost certainly yeast connected.

Crohns.net recommendation for control of Candida & other yeast and Fungus Overgrowth:

  1. Start with Oreganol followed by OMX. These products will change the environment surrounding the Candida and inhibit its growth, by killing the harmful organisms and destroying the membrane of the Candida Albicans cell. Only then can the body's own immune system slowly attack the yeast infection.
  2. Eliminate the foods from your diet that feed yeast: Gluten grains, sugars, yeasts, and dairy products (except goat). The Candida Cookbook will provide you with lots of delicious recipes to accommodate your special needs.
  3. Other supplement recommendations for those with Candida include: Vitamin B complex and Essential Fatty Acids

Evaluation of Candida/Candidiasis and other digestive fungus and yeast.

Genova or Great Smokies Candida Albicans anti fungal test for yeast infection
Microbiology Test

Microbiology home test evaluates the stool for levels of yeast, other pathogenic and imbalanced flora as well as beneficial helpful probiotic flora.

Genova Microbiology Test will identify which strains of yeast are present in your system and also what treatment agents, both medicinal and herbal, will assist in eliminating the particular fungus or yeast, which may not be the candida strain. Thus, the particular treatment needed specifically for you, is established.

If you have been treated for Candida and still have symptoms, consider running Genova, aka as Great Smokie's, Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis & Parasitology Test. Other pathogenic organisms like bacteria and parasites, as well as numerous strains of fungus and yeast, besides candida, will mimic the symptoms of candida. The comprehensive test will give you added information about your digestive malfunction. It will also identify which strains of bacteria, parasitea and yeast are present in your system. Treatment agents, both medicinal and herbal, are recommended that will assist in eliminating these pathogenic organisms.

Acid and Alkaline Balance

Candida overgrowth manifests as hyperacidity in the body. An acid environment is ideal to foster increased growth of yeast and fungus.

A simple home Litmus paper test used on a regular basis will help you assess and adjust your acid/alkaline balance.

Changes may also be made by selecting foods that are more alkaline than acid forming. See Acid & Alkaline forming Food List
