Probiotics are beneficial helpful bacteria that help support healthy microbial balance in the gut. Healthy human intestines contain billions of microorganisms - both beneficial or 'good bacteria' and potentially harmful or 'bad bacteria'. The beneficial bacteria in the intestines are considered an integral part of normal immune system support. Healthy people usually have a ratio of approximately 85% good bacteria and 15% harmful organisms in the intestinal tract. When your intestinal lining is occupied by healthy beneficial helpful flora, it leaves unwelcome microorganisms deprived of both space and nutrients. Symptoms of Crohns Disease are associated with an overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria.
It doesn't take much to shift the balance of good bacteria to harmful organisms from favorable to unfavorable, however. In some cases, even those who appear healthy may have an unfavorable ratio of good and helpful bacteria to bad and pathogenic bacteria due to daily exposure of environmental toxins or simply from enjoying a modern lifestyle and diet. Even taking antibiotics or drinking chlorinated water may be enough to disrupt the optimal microbial balance essential for good health.
Garden of Life founder Jordan Rubin who was cured of Crohns Disease, believes that probiotics are their most beneficial when they are not separated from their food source. The friendly and helpful bacteria in Primal Defense HSOs probiotics are cultured with whole foods and then left intact. Many probiotic companies separate the probiotics from their food source. This is why so many probiotics need to be kept refrigerated. Once stripped of their food source, probiotics need to be kept refrigerated in order to remain viable. But what happens when these probiotics are introduced to the acidic environment of the stomach that is at 98.6 degrees? For this reason, Garden of Life believes the probiotic food source is as important to the delivery of the benefits of probiotics as the probiotics themselves.

When inflammation is prevalent in the body, the bad or pathogenic bacteria outnumber the good and helpful bacteria (probiotics). This manifests as hyperacidity. An acid environment is ideal to foster increased growth of all pathogenic organisms including bacteria, parasites, yeast and fungus. A simple home Litmus paper test used on a regular basis will help you assess and adjust your acid/alkaline balance. Changes may also be made by selecting foods that are more alkaline than acid forming. See Acid & Alkaline forming Food List
A comprehensive home stool test from Great Smokies Lab can give you more insight into your digestive function and gut microbial ecology. The Great Smokies test offers a noninvasive differential diagnosis between Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohns Disease and Ulcerative Colitis) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), expanded bacteria, yeast and parasite detection, a reliable assessment of exocrine pancreatic function, and a noninvasive risk assessment for colorectal cancer. If bacteria, yeast or parasites are detected, they are grown out to establish which natural products will inhibit their growth. Levels of probiotics (beneficial helpful bacteria) are also evaluated.
