There is a revolution under way in the multiple vitamin and mineral
category.
A product called Living Multi is starting
it.
Ordinarily, we loathe the term revolution to describe an advancement
in medicine because a revolution means a breakage from the past,
something so new and different that it cannot be compared with what
has come before, a paradigm shift. Most breakthroughs in nutrition
and science represent evolutions. But Living Multi,
we believe, truly represents a revolution both in the way nutrients
are made available to the human body and in its ability to bring
the body into dynamic balance, known as homeostasis. Indeed, as
clinical study results come in for Living Multi,
it will become not only the most thoroughly clinically validated
multiple vitamin-mineral formula in America today, but also the
only multiple formula to undergo such a wide range of clinical testing.
Back to the Future
There are different schools of thought in the field of nutritional
supplementation. Each has its merits, based on the premise that
any nutrient is good, but that there are degrees of benefit or goodness
to be derived from such nutrients.
The older school, which we can date back to at least the 1930s,
utilized whole food concentrates as a source of essential nutrients.
Concentrated foods such as wheat and barley grass were considered
our first multivitamins. No wonder today these grasses remain such
popular health drinks.
But then came along the promises of chemical scientists who claimed
they could duplicate these miracle foods’ nutrients in their
laboratories. Thus, with the advent of sophisticated scientific
technology, individual nutrients such as beta-carotene, ascorbic
acid (vitamin C) and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) could not only
be identified in the whole food matrix but, also, simplified imitations
created through synthetic means and raw materials.
Such breakthroughs led to the modern multiple vitamin and mineral
formulas that utilize, for the most part, isolated or synthetic
vitamins and minerals created in the laboratory. These types of
formulas rely on USP or United States Pharmacopoeia -type nutrients.
These are pulled or isolated from their natural cofactors and, more
often, synthesized, much like their pharmaceutical cousins. When
they are taken into the human body if sufficient cofactors are not
supplied such as other vitamins, minerals and enzymes, then the
body might not be able to use them. Sometimes, these nutrient isolates
or USP vitamins and minerals are combined with food concentrates
and herbs. This is certainly an improvement over the isolated nutrient
approach. But can we go further? That's the question one company,
Garden of Life, recently asked. We think the answer will surprise
you.
Many epidemiological studies show use of multiple vitamin and mineral
formulas provides important health benefits, ranging from improved
immune function and fewer days of illness, to reduction in risk
of cancer, heart disease and cataracts.
Yet, beyond USP and food-based nutrients mixes, an older (what we
think of as revolutionary) school of thought holds that nature offers
many unanticipated surprises that cannot be so easily identified
in a laboratory. These have been routinely brushed aside or ignored
by those scientists, pharmaceutical and nutritional companies who
remain devoted to their paradigm, committed to the US- and food-based
nutrient mixes.
Old School Updates Modern Paradigm
We have news: the old school is back. While no one knows for sure,
experts put the number of phytochemicals found in foods to be at
least 100,000 unique molecular structures. Far fewer of these have
ever been adequately characterized, much less synthesized, in the
laboratory.
Recently, scientists have learned that synthetic nutrients created
in the laboratory are highly simplified imitations of the more complex
structures found in nature, particularly in various whole foods.
Not surprisingly, scientific studies have also established the inferiority
of synthetic vitamins. Synthetic vitamin E is known to be significantly
less potent in the human body than its natural counterpart E. What's
more, vitamin E has many closely related natural co-factors, many
more potent than so-called vitamin E or the tocopherol compound
itself, that synthetic products do not provide. Similarly, researchers
focused for a long time on beta-carotene, which could be made synthetically
from petrochemical sources, but they neglected important research
on related compounds such as lycopene and lutein, also members of
the carotenoid family, and that we now know are critical to prostate
and eye health, respectively. This begs the question some astute
health experts now ask: Why should an isolated fraction of an apple
or an orange, such as folate or ascorbic acid, be as beneficial
to the human organism as the whole apple or orange? In a sense,
Living Multi, as we hope to demonstrate, is far closer
to whole foods than any other current multiple vitamin or mineral
formula.
This begs the question some astute health experts now ask: Why should an isolated or chemically created fraction of an apple or an orange, such as folate or ascorbic acid, be as beneficial to the human organism as the whole apple or orange?
State of Our Health: We Can Do Better
For all the so-called benefits attributed to isolated and synthetic
nutrients and all of the progress we think we have made in improving
the health of the nation, there are many health experts who say
we can do even better. They note that three of four Americans will
develop heart disease and half will die from it. Diabetes is striking
baby boomers with a vengeance. About six percent of our population
presently has diabetes and many gerontologists believe that percentage
will increase significantly as the boomers enter their fifties and
sixties. (And they say that diet and nutrition will be crucial to
helping persons with diabetes maintain their health and reduce their
risk of complications.) Already, some 21 million pre-diabetic Americans
experience glucose intolerance, leading to Syndrome X, a condition
characterized by high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and
obesity. Some 200,000 Americans die every year from high blood pressure
and stroke. One-third of Americans are obese. To get a better picture
of what this means in pure numbers of mortality, more than 4,000
people daily die from heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes,
reports the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Synthetic or isolated nutrients may be better than nothing and we
encourage taking quality nutritional supplements with such synthetic
or isolated nutrients for many reasons, but, perhaps, they are not
good enough or no longer represent the leading edge. Adding them
to whole food concentrates is better but, still, not the way to
get our optimal health back.
Americans are taking supplements and spending more than $1 billion
annually on alternative medicine; indeed, more than half of all
Americans are now using some type of nutritional supplement, most
multiple vitamins and minerals. Yet, as we get older, we become
less healthy, more disabled, feeble-minded, fatigued, glucose intolerant,
obese and filled with artery-clogging plaque than ever. Since so
many people are using one type of nutritional supplement or another,
these morbidity and mortality numbers might otherwise be much higher.
That, in a sense, is the good news. The great news, and the real
challenge, is that we can do so much better. After all, maximum
life span has been established to be about 120 years. Why are we
being shorted 40 to 50 of those years?
Living Multi fits our philosophy to its core.
Healthy Living has been carrying on what is almost
a “crusade” for reliance on a whole food rather than
drug- or isolated nutrient-based strategy for combating nutrient
deficiencies. As a team of experts notes there is so much “new
knowledge regarding the interrelationship of nutrients and regarding
the multiplicity of beneficial phytochemicals besides conventional
nutrients present in today’s food supply.” What has
served to strengthen our plea is that it is now clear that no single
nutrient, or even a combination of such laboratory creations, can
“mimic” the beneficial effects achieved through overall
dietary improvement.
Back to Basics with Living Multi
Before the advent of widespread modern agriculture, the human diet
consisted mostly of fruits, vegetables, wild grain and seeds, and
fish, and meat from wild animals. No matter how far we have progressed
socially and technologically, our bodies crave the foods of our
ancestors. Our genetic constitutions and nutritional requirements
were established during our distant past. People living during primitive
times were optimally adapted to the types of foods that they could
gather, and there’s no evidence to suggest that modern humans
are any different. We are literally designed to eat the same foods
in the same forms as thousands of years ago. Our physiology and
biochemistry cry out for a primitive diet with its plentiful amounts
of healthy meat, fish, fruit, vegetables and nuts. We have departed
so far from the wisdom of our forefathers that fully 55 percent
of the American diet is “new food” not eaten by our
ancestors.

The Beneficial Components in Living Multi
|
So how do you do it? How do you move from the modern diet to ancestral
foods? Living Multi is formulated to provide the
levels of nutrients found in our ancestor’s diet in a body-ready
form. Not only is Living Multi putting back the
amount people received from ancient foods but also in a form similar
to what people once received. It goes beyond isolates, food based,
or even so called “whole food” nutrients. Let’s
look at some of the key innovations in Living Multi:
Homeostatic Nutrient Complexes
Living Multi utilizes homeostatic nutrient (HN)
complexes, vitamins and minerals liberated and potentiated by probiotic
microorganisms and their byproducts including enzymes and organic
acids. This isn’t simply mixing but rather nutritional alchemy.
The process of turning ordinary vitamins and minerals into living
“whole food” structures can be called “organic
transmutation.” Organic, plant-derived vitamins and minerals
are able to be safely used by our body because of the fact that
nature has acted upon them and transformed them into organic material
rather than allowing them to remain in their elemental form. Whenever
vitamins and minerals come into contact with the beneficial byproducts
of probiotic fermentation in a water medium, they are naturally
dissolved into an ionic form. These nutrients literally become part
of the whole food complex. This is what takes place during the production
of the homeostatic nutrient complexes contained in Living
Multi.
In 1927 Hungarian scientist Albert Szent-Gyorgyi discovered vitamin
C, using paprika and orange to isolate a white crystalline powder.
Szent-Gyorgyi began concentrating this powder and was finding better
and better results with scurvy patients until the powder became
too pure, at which time responses declined. Clearly, the scientist
observed, isolated vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid was probably
not optimal. Szent-Gyorgyi received the Nobel Prize for his work,
but it wasn’t until 1955 that he discovered a whole other
set of phytochemicals, now known as vitamin P or bioflavonoids,
provided for the effective utilization of pure vitamin C in the
human body. These are some of the co-factors missing from the vitamin
isolate.
A student of Szent-Gyorgyi, Andrew Szalay, came to the United States
in the late 1930s. At that time, pure ascorbic acid and other vitamins
and minerals were already being sold as chemicals in isolate form,
which distressed him. Szalay, acutely aware of the diminished results
of pure isolates, began taking these isolates and recombining them
with whole foods. For example, some companies now combine inorganic
selenium under reactive conditions with live yeast. The selenium
becomes part of the yeast whole food matrix to produce a selenium-yeast
matrix. At the end of the process, outer membranes of yeast cells
are removed and a supplement is produced known as selenium yeast.
Absorption, bioavailability and utility can be dramatically increased.
Building on and advancing this knowledge, Garden of Life has uniquely
and naturally complexed each vitamin and mineral in Living
Multi using a wide range of beneficial microorganisms in
a process that lasts three to six weeks (and resulting in a product
that is yeast free). Whereas other so-called whole food vitamin
and mineral products can contain up to 75 percent yeast, a common
allergen, Living Multi provides enhanced benefits
with no drawbacks. Perhaps the most unique and exciting result of
this probiotic fermentation is the fact that the beneficial microorganisms
and enzymes created in Living Multi remain alive
in the product; hence, the name Living Multi. Whereas
yeast containing vitamin and mineral supplements must destroy the
live yeast due to its potential health hazards, Living Multi
provides an abundant array of “live” probiotics and
enzymes that not only expertly deliver nutrients but continue to
work in the body, providing many health enhancing benefits. Living
Multi contains a wide range of effective whole food concentrates,
including twenty-three different fruits, twenty vegetables, nine
different ocean plants, eleven different medicinal mushrooms, six
botanicals, and more than 100 naturally occurring fulvic acid and
ocean based ionic minerals to create an unprecedented health tool.
The amount of whole food nutrients contained in Living Multi
is up to ten times more than other nutritional formulas.
The process of creating homeostatic nutrient complexes is called
Poten-Zyme™. Predigestion with Poten-Zyme is essentially an
ancient method of fermentation, incorporating beneficial microorganisms
(probiotics) and their byproducts including enzymes and organic
acids into the nutrients and foods to gently meld them into one.
It brings these nutrients to life and provides them in their natural
complexed form.
Poten-Zyme fermentation lasts three to six weeks (whereas other
fermentation methods last as little as four hours). This longer
fermentation time allows for the probiotics to create a much larger
variety and concentration of novel health-promoting compounds. The
end result is that the nutrients have been complexed into their
preferred form and made body ready, not only predigested but also
activated with all necessary co-factors such as enzymes, vitamins,
minerals, and amino acids. Also created are multitudes of essential
biochemicals that the body craves, including the body’s master
antioxidant superoxide dismutase, as well as various immune-supportive
beta-glucans; antimicrobial peptides; bacteriocins; biosurfactants;
biotins; coenzymes; conjugated linolenic acids; glutathione; chromium
compounds; hydrogen peroxide; lactic acid; and lysozyme.
Importance of Trace Mineral Activators
Vitamins are groups of chemically related compounds. But in nature
they come to us with “activators,” those trace elements
necessary so the body can assimilate the vitamins. During the Poten-zyme
fermentation process, Living Multi utilizes a mineral-rich
liquid substrate obtained from the Great Salt Lake of Utah. This
mineral mix is so concentrated the amount in one serving in
Living Multi is the equivalent of one-quarter cup of seawater
(with 99.5 percent of the sodium removed). The Great Salt Lake,
where this mineral source comes from, is the largest body of concentrated
seawater in the world and over thousands of years has concentrated
many of the minerals found in the sea through geothermal and evaporative
processes. It is rich in certain minerals and trace minerals, like
magnesium, selenium, lithium, and boron that are vitally important
to human health and compatible to human physiological needs. Also,
because of its high concentrations, the Great Salt Lake is uniquely
low in toxic heavy metals and detectable trace contaminants. (That
the trace mineral mix is free from heavy metal contaminants has
been determined by laboratory testing at low detection limits.)
The minerals are not only ionic but also highly concentrated in
a balance almost identical to that found in healthy blood plasma
and in the lymphatic system. Among the minerals contained in Living
Multi are magnesium, chloride, sulfate, potassium, sodium,
lithium, calcium, bromide, iodine, rubidium, scandium, boron, phosphorous,
manganese, chromium, cobalt, zinc, copper, iron, silicon, indium,
molybdenum, gallium, gold, silver, cesium, beryllium, selenium,
vanadium, and many others.
As we mentioned, this substrate is added during the fermentation
process, and the microorganisms utilize and complex these minerals
and convert them to even more usable and soluble substances. Thus,
these ionized conductors of the body’s electrical currents
support necessary bodily functions as catalysts and activators of
other nutrients, building blocks of enzymes, hormones, and other
natural body chemicals used by the body to perform specific functions.
Also, it is known that in the absence of certain trace minerals,
certain heavy metals are likely to accumulate. (Trace minerals are
often administered in hospitals as part of treatment in such disorders
as lead poisoning.) Thus, we see that Living Multi influences
our health in a polluted environment.
The Power of Fulvic Acid-based Minerals
During the fermentation process, many of the minerals in the trace
and major mineral substrate become complexed with organic acids
including fulvic acid, which is thought by leading
natural health experts to be one of the most important “missing
links” in the modern human food chain. Medical and agricultural
research continues to conclusively point to one fact: fulvic acid
either directly or indirectly holds the keys and solutions to many
of the world’s health problems.
Important for microbial processes that drive many ecosystems in
our world, fulvic acid and related humic substances have been documented
to interact in some manner with over 50 elements from the periodic
table. Consider that nearly every pharmaceutical drug, herbal extract,
health supplement, or therapeutic substance from nature, can somehow
be traced to the functions and actual makeup of fulvic acid. Consider
that the DNA of every living or extinct species of organism on earth,
whether plant, animal, or microbe, has eventually become a highly
refined component of fulvic acid.
Fulvic acid production is, in essence, nature’s perfect recycling
process, where the end product, fulvic acid, provides a steady increase
in health to subsequent generations of living organisms. Fulvic
acid contains all of the phytochemical protective substances, amino
acid peptides, and nucleic acids from the original plant matter,
highly concentrated, refined, transformed, and enhanced by the actions
of innumerable microscopic plants. Even small strands of RNA, DNA,
and plant photosynthetic materials remain still intact. Many of
the original components become complex enzymes, which have seemingly
miraculous functions. Nature meant for small amounts of fulvic acid
to participate at every level and link along the food chain. It
contains latent solar energy, remnants of plant photosynthesis.
Fulvic acid even bridges the gap between inert minerals and living
matter, and it participates in the spark of life. Fulvic acid mineral
complexes like those in Living Multi serve as premier
electrolytes, improving energy function. Fulvic acid minerals are
also excellent chelators of heavy metals and provide phenomenal
protection from free radicals by acting as a chief antioxidant.
The consumption of fulvic acid also aids in balancing our human
microflora by providing antimicrobial substances. While fulvic acid
is of paramount importance to the human body, our American diet
has become nearly void of this miraculous substance.
Georgian Longevity Foods— Rhododendron caucasicum, Blueberry
Leaf, Apple Skin and Pomegranate
In the course of recovering from his illness, as related in Patient
Heal Thyself (now with over 200,000 copies in print),
Living Multi formulator Jordan Rubin, N.M.D., C.N.C., learned
many of the healthy living secrets of the longest-lived peoples
of the world. Thus, Living Multi contains clinically
therapeutic amounts of famous Georgian longevity foods.
In the Republic of Georgia, formerly part of the Soviet Union, it
is not unusual for people to live beyond 100 years of age as active
members of society. When Russians marry, the bride and groom are
often toasted with the gifting of Georgian longevity, notes one
expert.
For over 2,000 years, Georgians have consumed alpine tea as a daily
ritual along with pomegranate juice, mineral rich water, and probiotic-infused
beverages as a part of their daily diet.
It has been theorized that their long lives may be attributed to
regular consumption of these foods. Alpine tea is brewed from the
young leaves of Rhododendron caucasicum. Thirty years of research
and many clinical studies indicate that this adaptogen improves
physical abilities, increases activity of the cardiovascular system,
and increases blood supply to muscles and brain. Studies have demonstrated
that it confers resistance of the organism to unfavorable chemical,
physical, and biological imbalances. Rhododendron caucasicum has
been shown to enhance the body’s ability to burn fat and has
been proven in studies to aid in healthy weight management. Rhododendron
caucasicum has been shown to reverse acidity and has a marked anti-inflammatory
effect.
Caucasian blueberry leaves are also regularly consumed.
Results of many clinical studies show that Caucasian blueberry leaves
are especially rich in chlorogenic acid, invaluable for helping
to normalize blood glucose levels, prevention of heart disease,
and normalizing lipid profiles (cholesterol and triglycerides).
Caucasian blueberry leaves’ high chlorogenic acid content
also aids in protection against radiation. Because Caucasian blueberry
is ecologically harvested from the wild, it isn’t sprayed
with pesticides (most domestically cultivated blueberry crops are
intensively sprayed with pesticides).
Georgian pomegranate is a powerful antioxidant-rich
fruit and source of ellagic acid, which inhibits many types of chemical
carcinogens, including tobacco smoke. Georgian pomegranate also
reduces blood pressure and risk of coronary artery disease. Pomegranate
has been shown to provide effective protection against parasitic
infestation.
Of course, you should eat apples. Maybe even more than the one a
day the age-old adage advises us to consume to keep away the doctor.
Everything you learned about apples is true. In fact, if apples
were newly discovered, they would be the nutrient of the century.
Apples (both their fruit and skin) contain a diverse range of active
phytochemicals that are strongly medicinal. Apples reduce heart
disease, contain phytoestrogens, reduce cancer risk, reduce allergic
reactions, improve lung function, prevent dental caries, and have
excellent antioxidant powers. Georgian mountain apple skin
extract has also been shown to improve skin appearance
and aid in the regulation of blood sugar levels.
The Power of Chlorophyllin
The blend of rye, wheat, oat, barley and alfalfa grass juices with
spirulina and chlorella provides a whole gamut of chlorophyll rich
foods that, when fermented in the presence of copper, produce highly
beneficial compounds such as chlorophyllin, a water-soluble chlorophyll
derivative produced from fermented green foods. Chlorophyllin has
anti-cancer, anti-mutagenic, antioxidant, and life-extension benefits
that may exceed even chlorophyll. For example, chlorophyllin can
cross cell membranes organelle membranes, and blood-brain barriers;
chlorophyll cannot. Chlorophyllin even enters into the mitochondria,
the energy producing organelles of the cell, and where the majority
of free radicals are produced. Chlorophyllin quenches all major
reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide, hydrogen peroxide,
singlet oxygen, and even the dangerously reactive hydroxyl radical,
at very low dosages. It has been shown to be a potent mitochondrial
antioxidant that not only protects mitochondria from their own auto-oxidation
(which is considered to be a possible cause of aging) but also protects
the mitochondria from a variety of external, chemical, biological,
and radiation insults. Since the mitochondria are the energy factories
of the cell, protecting them is a key aspect of optimal health as
we age. Mutagenic research has shown chlorophyllin suppresses mutagenic
activity of carcinogens and fried pork, diesel emissions and coal
dust by more than 90 percent.
Homeostatic Calcium— Complete with Co-factors
The form of calcium used in Living Multi is not
simply an isolated inorganic mineral. Rather, it is derived from
seaweed that is harvested off the southwest coast of Ireland. A
wide variety of body-essential nutrients, including calcium, magnesium,
boron, zinc, phosophoros, boron, fluorine, sodium and copper are
found in this homeostatic calcium. Again, we return to the fact
that no nutrient is designed to be used by the body without co-factors.
Magnesium is involved in calcium metabolism and in the conversion
of vitamin D into its active form, as well as maintaining bone integrity.
Boron plays a role in converting Vitamin D into its active form,
thus participating in the calcium absorption process.
The Power of Alpha-lipoic Acid
Living Multi has extremely high levels of antioxidant
nutrients and provides 150 mg of alpha-lipoic acid, much higher
than most of the other formulations (if they even have this vital
antioxidant).
Levels are known to be lower in people with heart disease and diabetes,
and studies show alpha-lipoic acid to be of critical importance
in the treatment of liver problems. Supplementation may be beneficial
in virtually all of the chronic diseases. Benefits to athletes include
enhanced energy production in muscle tissues, decreased glucose
uptake by fat cells, and improved muscle recovery.
Lutein and Lycopene for Added Protection
Lutein is an important carotenoid now known to be widely protective
against chronic diseases affecting vision such as cataracts and
age-related macular degeneration. Lycopene reduces the risk of prostate
cancer and its spread to other tissues and can be an important nutrient
for heart health. Living Multi contains up to 25
times more lutein and lycopene than other multiple formulas.
Living
Multi—Join the Healthy Living Revolution
“People take multiple vitamin and mineral formulas because
they believe it’s an insurance policy,” notes Living
Multi formulator Jordan Rubin, N.M.D., C.N.C., author
of Patient Heal Thyself. “We are setting out to prove
that Living Multi is just that, except, better
than any insurance policy, because it’s the insurance
policy that will allow you to not have to use your regular insurance
policy.
“Before
formulating this product I decided it was imperative to subject
it to rigorous double blind clinical trials. Many companies
claim that their multiple vitamin mineral formulas accomplish
many things. However, not one of them has yet to prove it. While
good ingredients combined with a good story are enough for many
companies to generate sales, I believe today’s intelligent
consumer needs more; they need hard clinical data, combined
with unequalled ingredients and a great factually ‘true’
story; that’s what we’re going to give them.”
Dr. Rubin, who also pioneered the use of homeostatic soil organisms,
notes, “We are going to see how the body is really ONE
inter-related system. The problem with many alternative and
holistic medicines is that they often try to fix one system
or function instead of addressing the whole organism and trying
to improve the body’s general ability to enhance its nutritional
status and detoxify. With Living Multi, we
want to put the emphasis on the whole body and give it all of
the tools it needs to heal itself.”
