Although soil microorganisms appear to be as old as the earth, product specific, blind placebo controlled studies on Primal Defense's Homeostatic Soil Organisms have only recently been conducted. These studies have been published in the peer-reviewed journal "Progress in Nutrition". Following is a summary of one of those studies.
I was introduced to Primal Defense Homeostatic Soil Organisms in 1999 through the writings of Dr. Jordan Rubin. As a University Professor of Public Health and Gastroenterology, I found this theory to be academically sound, and as a Clinical Epidemiologist, Physician, and Clinical Nutritionist I was intrigued at the possible health benefits my own patients might enjoy if given HSOs, particularly those with serious chronic health problems, who make up the bulk of my practice.
I do not, however, use new products or therapies with my patients haphazardly. I therefore contacted Dr. Jordan Rubin and requested that he allow me to run a clinical trial with Primal Defense at our clinic, which has an adjoining laboratory. I cautioned him that most patients come to the clinic due to severe chronic health problems that have been unresponsive to conventional and complimentary treatments. I made clear that I would choose subjects for my proposed study from individuals suffering from complex digestive and immune system disorders that had not been responsive to prior dietary and lifestyle changes, i.e. I would choose difficult subjects who had repeatedly tried to get well and failed. I wanted laboratory analysis (blood chemistry, CBC, and mycology "yeast" overgrowth evaluation through stool and blood antibody titers) to be performed on all subjects to quantify any improvements or worsening in their conditions.
The subjects chosen ranged in ages from 20 to 65, were symptomatic for an average of 5 years, and were given Primal Defense HSO probiotics for 120 days. Of the seventeen subjects completing the study, sixteen reported significant clinical improvements in their overall health, including partial to full relief from bowel problems, decreased incidences of shortness of breath, reductions in symptoms of constant fatigue, decreases in joint pain, increases in energy levels, clearing of chronic sinus infections, improvements in skin conditions and overall sense of well being. Three subjects who suffered from long-term constipation with laxative dependency, were able to move their bowels daily without the use of laxatives. No subjects reported a worsening of their symptoms at the conclusion of the study.
Laboratory analysis revealed no adverse effects of any kind. On the contrary, and of great significance, lab analyses via blood and stool assays revealed an appreciable lowering of yeast counts in all of the eight subjects who had previous elevations, along with pronounced improvements in their symptoms.
The details of this published study can be found in Progress In Nutrition, Vol.4, Supplement I Dec. 2002.
